City Line (Merseyrail)
The Merseytravel City Line is shown in red on the Merseytravel-produced Merseyrail map. The City Line is 'shared' commuter train services that terminate at Liverpool Lime Street. When a commuter train, not operated by Merseyrail, enters the Liverpool City Region it essentially becomes a City Line service with stations given Merseyrail's yellow branding, signage and ticketing. Services on the City Line are provided by Northern, Transpennine Express, Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, Transport for Wales, and West Midlands Trains. Commuter Rail
Commuter rail, or suburban rail, is a passenger rail transport service that primarily operates within a metropolitan area, connecting commuters to a central city from adjacent suburbs or commuter towns. Crewe–Liverpool Line
The Crewe–Liverpool line is a railway line in North West England that diverges from the West Coast Main Line at Weaver Junction north of and runs to via and Liverpool South Parkway. History The line was built in stages by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, the St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway and the London and North Western Railway during the mid-19th century. The route became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923, passing to the London Midland Region of British Railways in 1948. Electrification The line was electrified at 25 kV AC, using overhead wires under the BR 1955 Modernisation Plan. Wapping Tunnel
Wapping or Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool, England, is a tunnel route from the Edge Hill junction in the east of the city to the Liverpool south end docks formerly used by trains on the Liverpool-Manchester line railway. The tunnel alignment is roughly east to west. The tunnel was designed by George Stephenson with construction between 1826 and 1829 to enable goods services to operate between Liverpool docks and all locations up to Manchester, as part of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. It was the first transport tunnel in the world to be bored under a city. The Merseyrail Northern line is a cross-city railway running from in south Liverpool then (by way of an underground section through Liverpool's city centre) to termini in the north at (Merseyside), (Lancashire) and (Merseyside). It and the Wirral Line are commuter rail services operated by Merseyrail, serving Merseyside. Merseytravel is the passenger transport executive, responsible for the coordination of public transport in the Liverpool City Region in North West England. Merseytravel was established on 1 December 1969 as the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive.
