City Route 85
''City Route 85'' is a solo EP by John K. Samson of The Weakerthans, released October 30, 2009 on Grand Hotel van Cleef in Europe, and November 3, 2009 on ANTI-/ Epitaph in North America. Samson's first solo release since the EP ''Little Pictures'' in 1995, it was the first in a planned series of three or four-song singles inspired by roads in his home province of Manitoba. Winnipeg's Route 85 is also known by the street name Portage Avenue. Epitaph Records is an American independent record label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most acts signed to the label were punk and pop punk acts, while there are many post-hardcore and emo bands signed to the label as well. A large portion of the record label, known as Hellcat Records, is owned by Tim Armstrong, frontman of the punk rock band Rancid. Grand Hotel Van Cleef
Grand Hotel van Cleef is an independent record label headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Label history Grand Hotel van Cleef was founded in September 2002 by the musicians Thees Uhlmann, Marcus Wiebusch and Reimer Bustorff. The newly formed band of Bustorff an Wiebusch '' Kettcar'' had recently recorded their first album, ''Du und wie viel von deinen Freunden'', (engl.: You and how many of your friends) but they found no label to release it. In addition, it was clear that Uhlmann's band Tomte would release their third album ''Hinter all diesen Fenstern (engl.: Behind all these windows)''. The big fan base even before the publication was ultimately the deciding factor to start the label. ''Little Pictures'' is a solo EP recorded between 1993 and 1994 by John K. Samson, then of Propagandhi. It was released in 1995 as a split album with Painted Thin's '' Small Acts of Love and Rebellion''. It was one of G7 Welcoming Committee's first releases, in a PET film pouch. Samson later left Propagandhi and formed The Weakerthans. All six songs also appeared on his solo demo tape ''Slips and Tangles''. The Weakerthans are an award-winning and Juno-nominated Canadian indie rock band from Winnipeg. The band, led by John K. Samson, has released four studio albums and is currently inactive. History The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait of Red Fisher, another band from Winnipeg's punk scene, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than their previous projects. The origin of the band's name was explained, in 2004 by Samson, as having come from "a few places."
