The City of Canning is a local government area in the southeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about southeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of approximately 90,000 as at the 2016 Census. History A short-lived attempt to create a town trust for the Canning District lasted from 1843-1847, before it was dissolved. The area continued to develop under the control of a Central Board of Works until, in 1871, the Canning Road District was established under the ''District Roads Act 1871''. The City of Canning originated as the Municipality of Queen's Park, which was established on 1 July 1907 when the original Canning Road District was divided into two and split into the Queen's Park municipality and the Gosnells Road District (later to become the City of Gosnells). Ferndale, Western Australia
Ferndale is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning. It is approximately from Perth's central business district. History The name Ferndale originated from developers who decided not to proceed with the City of Canning's choice of Shearnstead. In 1965, the name change was approved. The eastern section of Ferndale Crescent was once Menzies Road. Low scrub forest covered most of the suburb until developed in the late 1960s and 1970s. East Cannington, Western Australia
East Cannington is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning. History East Cannington, previously part of Queens Park Road Board District and once incorporating present day Beckenham, was largely a semi-rural area, with only the area near the railway used for housing. In 1959, the suburb was gazetted as a postal district. Many farms and horse agistment properties once populated East Cannington until developers realised its potential in the 1990s and thus almost all available land has now given way to suburban housing. Canning Vale is a southern suburb of Perth, from the central business district. Its local government areas are the City of Canning (west of Nicholson Road) and the City of Gosnells (east of Nicholson Road). Bentley, Western Australia
Bentley is a southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, southeast of Perth's central business district. Its local government areas are the City of Canning and the Town of Victoria Park. Bentley is home to the main campus of Curtin University and Technology Park. The 2021 Australian census, simply called the 2021 Census, was the eighteenth national Census of Population and Housing in Australia. The 2021 Census took place on 10 August 2021, and was conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). It had a response rate of 96.1%, up from the 95.1% at the 2016 census. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as 25,422,788, an increase of 8.6 per cent or 2,020,896 people over the previous 2016 census. Woodloes Homestead
Woodloes Homestead was built in 1871 by architect Francis Bird. The homestead is situated on the banks of the Canning River in Cannington. Bird was partner in the Mason-Bird Timber Company, cut timber in the Darling Range and transported it via a horse-drawn railway to Mason's Landing, near Woodloes Homestead. Woodloes Homestead was classified by the National Trust in 1988, nominated to the Register of The National Estate in 1991 and permanently added to Western Australian State Heritage register on 21 January 1997. Design Woodloes Homestead is a square planned Victorian Georgian home with verandahs on all four sides. Originally it had a timber shingled roof that has since been replaced by corrugated iron before being returned to being timber shingled.
