Citronen
Citronen Fjord is a fjord in Peary Land, far northern Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. The name of the fjord was given by Danish Arctic explorer Eigil Knuth during the Danish Peary Land Expedition of 1947–1950. It was named after Danish freedom fighters. History In 1993 zinc and lead deposits were discovered in this fjord. They are considered to be the largest yet unexploited zinc deposits in the world and the exploitation of the Citronen mine is in the preparation phase. Australian Ironbark Zinc corporation and the People's Republic of China are involved in the mine projects of the Citronen Fjord. Geography Citronen Fjord is an offshoot on the southern shore of Frederick E. Hyde Fjord. It is located in Hans Egede Land, from Cape John Flagler, at the fjord entrance. Ironbark Zinc
Ironbark Zinc Limited is an Australian Securities Exchange listed (ASX: IBG) mineral resources company focused on the development of the Citronen mine Zinc Project in Greenland. History The Ironbark company listed on the ASX in August 2006 as Ironbark Gold and in March 2007 acquired the Citronen Project. To reflect its core focus on zinc and the Citronen Project, the company changed its name to Ironbark Zinc in November 2009. Ironbark's goal is to develop the Citronen Project into a major base metal mining operation in Greenland. The project hosts in excess of 10 billion pounds of zinc and lead, and has a JORC-compliant Resource of 55.8 million tonnes at 6.1% zinc and lead. Citronen Mine
The Citronen mine is one of the largest potential lead and zinc mines in Greenland. The mine is located in Citronen Fjord, Northern Greenland. The mine has reserves amounting to 100 million tonnes of ore grading 2% lead and 3% zinc. The mine is currently being developed by mineral resources company, Ironbark Zinc. The company has a nonbinding agreement with the China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group to finance and construct the mine. In 2020, Ironbark Zinc executed a letter of interest for a financing loan from the Export–Import Bank of the United States to develop the project. Initially planning to source financing from both China and the West, the company decided against sourcing from China Nonferrous due to geopolitical factors. Peary Land is a peninsula in northern Greenland, extending into the Arctic Ocean. A glacier (; ) is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries. Eigil Knuth
Count Eigil Knuth (8 August 1903 – 12 March 1996) was a Danish explorer, archaeologist, sculptor and writer. He is referred to as the Nestor ("elder statesman") of Danish polar explorers. His archaeological investigations were made in Peary Land and adjacent areas of High Arctic Greenland. Knuth was made a Knight of the Dannebrog. Early years Knuth was born in Klampenborg, near Copenhagen in Denmark. His parents were count Eigil Knuth sr, a captain, and Dijmphna (née Gamel). His hero was the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen who, in 1888, was the first to cross the Greenland ice cap; the trip was financed by State Councillor Augustinus Gamel, a Danish businessman, and Knuth's maternal grandfather.
