Cistus Munbyi
''Cistus munbyi'' is a shrubby species of flowering plant in the family Cistaceae, with white flowers. Related to and resembling ''Cistus clusii'', it is native to Morocco and Algeria in western north Africa. Description ''Cistus munbyi'' has narrow linear leaves with a single prominent vein, generally long by wide, with edges that are turned down (revolute). The upper surfaces of the leaves are smooth, the lower surfaces have a dense covering of short stellate hairs. It has white flowers. ''C. munbyi'' resembles '' C. clusii'', but the flower-bearing branches are longer and the flower stalks ( peduncles) and sepals are covered with white hairs, making them appear silky ("''sericeus''"). Taxonomy Giles Munby gave a description of this species under the name ''Cistus sericeus'' in 1847. The name had already been published by Martin Vahl in 1790, so that Munby's name is illegitimate. The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) describes itself as "a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of seed plants, ferns and lycophytes." Coverage of plant names is best at the rank of species and genus. It includes basic bibliographical details associated with the names. Nicolas Auguste Pomel (20 September 1821 – 2 August 1898) was a French geologist, paleontologist and botanist. He worked as a mines engineer in Algeria and became a specialist in north African vertebrate fossils. He was Senator of Algeria for Oran from 1876 to 1882. Life Nicolas-Auguste Pomel was born in Issoire, Puy-de-Dôme, on 20 September 1821. He studied at the Lycée de Clermont and earned his '' licence ès sciences''. He was conscripted into the army when he was prepared to enter the École des mines. He became a civil engineer after being released. Martin Henrichsen Vahl (10 October 1749 – 24 December 1804) was a Denmark-Norway, Danish-Norwegian botanist, herbalist and zoologist. Biography Martin Vahl was born in Bergen, Norway and attended Bergen Cathedral School. He studied botany at the University of Copenhagen and at Uppsala University under Carl Linnaeus. He edited ''Flora Danica'' fasc. XVI-XXI (1787–1799), ''Symbolæ Botanicæ'' I-III (1790–1794), ''Eclogæ Americanæ'' I-IV (1796–1807) and ''Enumeratio Plantarum'' I-II (1804–1805). Giles Munby (1813–1876) was an English botanist. His major work concerned plants in North Africa, where he lived for 15 years. Life Born at York, was the youngest son of Joseph Munby, a solicitor and under-sheriff of Yorkshire, but was orphaned when still very young. On leaving school Munby was apprenticed to a surgeon named Brown in York, and was involved in attending to the poor during the cholera epidemic of 1832. Entering the medical school of the University of Edinburgh, he attended the botanical lectures and excursions held by Robert Graham. Munby then "walked the hospitals" in London and, in 1835, in Paris, where he began a lifelong friendship with John Percy.
