Cinema Of Kurdistan
Kurdish cinema () focuses on the Kurdish people and culture. The fate of the Kurds as a people without a state shaped their cinema. Kurdish films often show social grievances, oppression, torture, human rights violations, and life as a stranger. Kurdish cinema has a high significance for the Kurds, as it offers the opportunity to draw attention to their own situation artistically. However, because of state repression, most films are produced in exile. The best example of this is in Turkey, where Kurds were not permitted to speak their native language until 1991, which made the development of their films more difficult. History The first documented Kurdish film produced in Soviet Armenia was a 1927 silent film called '' Zarê'', directed by Hamo Beknazarian. Yol (film)
''Yol'' (; translated as ''The Way'', ''The Road'' or ''The Path'') is a 1982 Turkish film directed by Yılmaz Güney and Şerif Gören. The screenplay was written by Güney—who at the time was in prison—with detailed directing instructions, which were carried out by his assistant Gören. Later, after Güney escaped from İmralı prison, Imrali prison, took the negatives of the film to Switzerland and later edited it in Paris. The film is a portrait of Turkey in the aftermath of the 1980 Turkish coup d'état: its people and its authorities are shown via the stories of five prisoners given a week's home leave. The film has caused much controversy in Turkey, and was banned until 1999. However, it won numerous honours, including the Palme d'Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. Yüksel Yavuz (born 1 February 1964 in Karakoçan, Turkey) is a Kurdish film director from Turkey. Early life and education Since 1980, he has lived in Germany, where he lived with his father who had found work at the port of Hamburg. From 1986 to 1989 he studied sociology and economics at the University of Hamburg and from 1992 to 1996 visual communications at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Hisham Zaman
Hisham Zaman (born 1 February 1975) is a Norwegian film director and screenwriter of Kurdish origin. He graduated from the Norwegian Film School at Lillehammer in 2004. His films center on the stories and inner dilemmas of characters united by a common refugee experience, exploring human themes such as love, acceptance, sacrifice, revenge, loyalty and honour. Bahman Ghobadi (; ; born February 1, 1969) is an Iranian Kurdish film director, producer and writer. He belongs to the " new wave" of Iranian cinema. Biography He was born in Baneh, a Kurdish city in Iran. His family moved to Sanandaj in 1981. Ghobadi received a Bachelor of Arts in film directing from Iran Broadcasting College. After a brief career in industrial photography, Ghobadi began making short 8 mm films. His documentary ''Life in Fog'' won numerous awards. Jano Rosebiani () is a Kurdish American filmmaker. He is the winner of numerous international awards and has been listed in the top 35 world filmmakers in the book "Cineaste Uit De Schaduw" (Filmmakers from the Shadow) by Belgian celebrity photographer Kris De Witte. Rosebiani was born in a small Kurdish town of Zumar on the banks of the Tigris and was raised and schooled in the town of Zakho.
