Cimarron Historic District
The Cimarron Historic District is a historic district on the south side of Cimarron, New Mexico, United States. The district is located south of US Route 64 on the east and west sides of New Mexico Highway 21. In 1973, the district was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. According to the National Register, the district contains and contains 6 significant buildings. There are fifteen buildings and historic sites shown on a 1986 map of the historic district #Early trading post. New Mexico State Road 21
New Mexico State Road 21 (NM 21), is a state highway located entirely in Colfax County in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The road starts in the center of the town of Cimarron at U.S. Route 64 (US 64) and runs southward then east to an intersection with unsigned I-25 Business (I-25 Bus.) and the western termini of US 56 and US 412 in Springer. Route description The road starts in the center of the town of Cimarron at the intersection of U.S. Route 64 (US 64) and Collision Avenue. It goes southward as South Collision Avenue. Leaving town limits it is called the Santa Fe Trail and passes by the well known Philmont Scout Ranch when it junctions with Cito Road and Conejo Road. On the road you can view the Tooth of Time and drive by the Villa Philmonte mansion and the Seton Memorial Library. The road continues to drive along Philmont property until it reaches Rayado. Cimarron, New Mexico
Cimarron is a village in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States, which sits on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The population was 1,021 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous municipality in Colfax County. Cimarron sits on the Cimarron River, a tributary of the 900 mile-long Canadian River, whose headwaters are at the Eagle Nest Dam, with the main part of town lying along U.S. Route 64. The village is surrounded on all sides by numerous ranches, including Philmont Scout Ranch, an extensive "high-adventure base" operated by the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont is located just four miles south of Cimarron. U.S. Route 64 (US 64) is an east–west United States highway that runs for 2,326 miles (3,743 km) from Nags Head in eastern North Carolina to just southwest of the Four Corners in northeast Arizona. The western terminus is at U.S. Route 160 in Teec Nos Pos, Arizona. The highway's eastern terminus is at NC 12 and U.S. Route 158 at Whalebone Junction, North Carolina. Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell (September 14, 1818 – July 25, 1875) was a mountain man, rancher, scout, and farmer who at one point owned more than . Along with Thomas Catron and Ted Turner, Maxwell was one of the largest private landowners in United States history. In 1959, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Background Maxwell was born in Kaskaskia, Illinois Territory, about three months before Illinois became a state. Colfax County is a county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,750. Its county seat is Raton. It is south from the Colorado state line. This county was named for Schuyler Colfax (18231885), seventeenth Vice President of the United States under U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant. Colfax County is the home of Philmont Scout Ranch and the NRA Whittington Center. History Colfax County was originally part of Taos County, one of the original nine counties created by the New Mexico Territory in 1852.
