Ciaran Williams
Ciaran Williams (born 22 December 1987 in Salford, Greater Manchester) is a British handball coach, currently head coach of Great Britain's U18 squad. At the 2012 Summer Olympics he competed with the Great Britain men's national handball team in the men's tournament. Early life Williams began playing handball at the age of 7, inspired by his parents who both played the game. Club career At senior club level, Williams played in Germany for TUSEM Essen alongside future Team GB teammates Christopher McDermott, Daniel McMillan and Christopher Mohr before playing in Denmark with Halden Topphandball. Whilst there, he had to clean toilets to earn money after funding was cut. He later returned to England and played for Salford Handball Club before being selected for Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics. Handball (also known as team handball, European handball, Olympic handball or indoor handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a Handball goalkeeper, goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. Christopher McDermott (born 7 June 1989) is a British handball player. He competed as part of Team GB at the 2012 London Olympic Games. He currently coaches the GB Men's Under 20s. Past clubs include R.D. Slovan of Slovenia, Danish Liga side Aarhus G.F. and German Bundasliga side TUSEM Essen. Handball At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's handball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held from 28 July to 12 August at the Olympic Park. The group stage matches were held at the Copper Box and the knockout rounds took place at the larger Basketball Arena. Twelve nations were represented in the tournament. The four best teams from each group advanced to a quarter-final round, while the 5th and 6th teams in each group were classified 9th–12th by the results of their group matches. Unlike in previous Olympics there was no placement matches involving the losing teams of the quarter-finals.
