Captain Marvel (real name: Mar-Vell; Earth alias Walter Lawson) is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee and designed by penciller, artist Gene Colan, the character first appeared in ''Marvel Super-Heroes (comics), Marvel Super-Heroes'' #12 (December 1967). He is the first character to use the moniker Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics), Captain Marvel in the Marvel Universe. The character debuted during the Silver Age of comic books and made many subsequent appearances, including a self-titled series and the second volume of the ''Marvel Spotlight'' series until The Death of Captain Marvel, his death in 1982, which has since Comic book death, remained largely permanent within mainstream continuity and most other media, with Carol Danvers (the former Ms. Marvel) becoming the primarily featured Captain Marvel in the modern age. Dave Cockrum
David Emmett Cockrum (; November 11, 1943 – November 26, 2006) was an American comics artist known for his co-creation of the new X-Men characters Nightcrawler (character), Nightcrawler, Storm (Marvel Comics), Storm, Colossus (character), Colossus, and Mystique (character), Mystique, as well as the antiheroine Black Cat (Marvel Comics), Black Cat. Cockrum was a prolific and inventive costume designer who updated the uniforms of the Legion of Super-Heroes and the X-Men in the 1970s and early 1980s. Early life Cockrum was born on November 11, 1943, in Pendleton, Oregon. His father was a Lieutenant colonel (United States), lieutenant colonel of the United States Air Force, resulting in the Cockrums frequently transporting their household from one city to another for years. Marvel Spotlight
''Marvel Spotlight'' is a comic book anthology series published by Marvel Comics as a try-out book. It stood out from Marvel's other try-out books in that most of the featured characters made their first appearance in the series. The series originally ran for 33 issues from November 1971 to April 1977. A second volume ran for 11 issues from July 1979 to March 1981. Publication history ''Marvel Spotlight'' was one of three tryout books proposed by Stan Lee after he transitioned from being Marvel Comics' writer and editor to its president and publisher, the others being '' Marvel Feature'' and '' Marvel Premiere''. The advantage of such tryout books was that they allowed the publisher to assess a feature's popularity without the marketing investment required to launch a new series, and without the blow to the publisher's image with readers if the new series immediately failed. Gil Kane
Gil Kane (; born Eli Katz , ; April 6, 1926 – January 31, 2000) was a Latvian-born American comics artist whose career spanned the 1940s to the 1990s and virtually every major comics company and character. Kane co-created the modern-day versions of the superheroes Hal Jordan, Green Lantern and the Atom (Ray Palmer), Atom for DC Comics, and co-created Iron Fist (character), Iron Fist and Adam Warlock with Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics. He was involved in the anti-drug storyline in ''The Amazing Spider-Man'' #96–98, which, at the behest of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, bucked the then-prevalent Comics Code Authority to depict drug abuse, and ultimately spurred an update of the Code. Kane additionally pioneered an early graphic novel prototype, ''His Name Is... Savage'', in 1968, and a seminal graphic novel, ''Blackmark'', in 1971.
