''Chromatography'' is a 2004 post trip-hop album by Second Person. This is the band's debut album and all songs were written by Julia Johnson and Mark Maclaine, except "Word for Word" which also credits Ed Webber and Tristan Kajanus, "Demons Die" which also credits Álvaro López and "Divine" which was written by Julia Johnson. Second Person (band)
Second Person were a British band that existed for 10 years between 2001 and 2011 and mixed influences from trip hop, jazz, hip hop and electronica to form post-trip hop. In late 2001, singer Julia Johnson and producer/bassist Mark Maclaine met, and early the following year formed the band Second Person. Drummer Álvaro López was recruited in mid-2004 to complete the final line up and their debut album ''Chromatography'' was released later that year. It went on to sell out of its initial white-label run in United Kingdom, USA and Australia through word of mouth and publicity generated by musical placements on documentaries and extreme sports films. The opening song "Too Cold To Snow" was later featured in the closing credits of 2006 film ''Dolls''. Trip Hop
Trip hop (sometimes used synonymously with " downtempo") is a musical genre that originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom, especially Bristol. It has been described as a psychedelic fusion of hip hop and electronica with slow tempos and an atmospheric sound, often incorporating elements of jazz, soul, funk, reggae, dub, R&B, and other forms of electronic music, as well as sampling from movie soundtracks and other eclectic sources. Mark Maclaine
Mark Maclaine (sometimes known as The Silence) is a British educator, director, music producer, founder of Tutorfair and writer. He is best known for his work as the bass guitarist and producer for the post trip-hop band Second Person. He was a co-founder of the UK hip-hop record label Dented Records and co-owner of a film company the Silence Corporation. History Maclaine started his career as a bass guitarist in London before eventually moving into music production. He began writing his own music under the name "The Silence". In April 2001, he started Dented Records with two members of a successful UK hip-hop group, Foreign Beggars. In 2002, Maclaine formed the post trip-hop band Second Person with the singer and pianist Julia Johnson. Julia Johnson
Julia Lois Johnson (born 1982) is an English author, singer, songwriter and a founder-member of the post trip hop band Second Person. Early life Johnson is the daughter of writer and former politician Stanley Johnson and his second wife, Jennifer (née Kidd); she has a brother, Maximilian, and their paternal half-siblings are Boris, Rachel, Jo, and Leo Johnson. Career Johnson was a founder member of Second Person in 2001; the group remained active until 2011. Her first solo album, ''I Am Not The Night'', recorded at Livingston Recording Studios and produced by Tristan Ivemy (Frank Turner, The Holloways), was released in May 2011 through the independent label Blue January. Álvaro López (musician)
Álvaro López (born 1979) is a drummer and producer. His most well-known project to date has been as drummer/programmer with the English trip hop band Second Person, working on their 2004 debut release '' Chromatography'' and the following two albums The Elements and Come to Dust with band-mates Julia Johnson and Mark Maclaine. The Madrid-born drummer/songwriter is also known for his work with The Feeling in their early days has produced and played on various electro tracks with a number of Spanish DJs including Karim Haas and Cristian Varela.
