Christos Michas
Christos Michas ( el, Χρήστος Μίχας; 1933 – 25 August 2010) was a Greek football (soccer), football referee who became the first Greek to officiate a European Cup final, the 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup Final. He belonged at the Athens Football Clubs Association, Athens association. Career Michas worked several high-profile matches, including four consecutive Greek Football Cup, Greek Cup List of Greek Cup finals, finals from 1968 to 1972, before being selected for European competitions. His performance at the 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was widely criticized, leading to an investigation. UEFA banned Michas from refereeing for life following the investigation. In 2009, Richard Corbett, an MEP for Yorkshire and Humber petitioned UEFA for a reversal of AC Milan's victory over Leeds United in the 1973 final. Super League Greece
The Super League Greece 1 ( el, Ελληνική Σούπερ Λιγκ 1), or Super League 1, is the highest professional association football league in Greece. The league was formed on 16 July 2006 and replaced ''Alpha Ethniki'' at the top of the Greek football league system. It consists of 14 teams and runs from August to May, with teams playing 26 games. As of May 2022, Super League Greece is ranked 15th in the UEFA ranking of leagues, based on performances in European competitions over the last five years. 1973 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final
The 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was the final football match of the 1972–73 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 13th European Cup Winners' Cup final. It was contested between Milan of Italy and Leeds United of England, and was held at Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki, Greece. Milan won the match 1–0 thanks to a goal by Luciano Chiarugi. The Greek crowd at the final reacted to perceived bias towards Milan by referee Christos Michas by throwing missiles during the victors' lap of honour, but despite protests, the result was not overturned. UEFA later banned Michas for life due to match fixing, although his role in this match was not investigated. Leeds, who perceived referee Christos Michas to have made a number of unfair decisions, attempted to gain a replay but UEFA denied the request. The 1974 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match of the 1973–74 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 14th European Cup Winners' Cup final. It was contested between Magdeburg of East Germany and the defending champions, Milan of Italy, and was held at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Magdeburg won the match 2–0 thanks to goals by Enrico Lanzi (own goal) and Wolfgang Seguin. It was the only time one of the major European trophies was won by an East German club. José María Ortiz De Mendíbil
José María Ortiz de Mendíbil Monasterio (11 August 1926 – 15 September 2015), also known as José María Ortiz, was a Spanish referee, active from 1953 to 1973. Life and career Mendíbil was born in Portugalete, Basque Country, Spain. During his 18 seasons in La Liga, between 1953 and 54 and 1972 and 73, he led 241 league games. He was promoted to international status the seasons 1958 and 1959, and was in it until the end of his career. He was the referee when Inter Milan beat Liverpool 3-0 in the 1965 European Cup semi-final second leg in a controversial game which subsequently let to claims that he had accepted bribes to facilitate an Inter Milan victory. On 24 May 1972 he took charge of the European Cup Winners' Cup Final played at the Camp Nou, Barcelona. 1972 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final
The 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match between Scottish team Rangers and Soviet team Dynamo Moscow. It took place at the Camp Nou in Barcelona on 24 May 1972 in front of a crowd of 35,000. It was the final of the 1971–72 European Cup Winners' Cup, one of three football competitions run by UEFA at the time. It was the 12th European Cup Winners' Cup final in history. Both teams had to go through four qualifying rounds to get reach the final. Rangers won three of their four qualifying ties in regulation time, with their second round tie against Sporting CP going into extra time. The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a European football club competition contested annually by the winners of domestic cup competitions. Richard Corbett
Richard Graham Corbett CBE (born 6 January 1955) is a former British politician who served as the final Leader of the European Parliamentary Labour Party (EPLP), from 2017 to 2020. He was a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Merseyside West from 1996 to 1999 (under the system that predated the proportional representation regional system) and then for Yorkshire and the Humber from 1999 to 2009, when he lost his seat, and again from 2014 to 2020. He attended Shadow Cabinet meetings and was a member of the Labour Party's National Executive Committee. In association football, the referee is the person responsible for interpreting and enforcing the Laws of the Game during a match. The referee is the final decision-making authority on all facts connected with play, and is the match official with the authority to start and stop play and impose disciplinary action against players and coaches during a match. At most levels of play the referee is assisted by two assistant referees (formerly known as linesmen), who advise the referee on whether the ball leaves the playing area and any infringements of the Laws of the Game occurring outside of the view of the referee. The Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) is an international organization dedicated to collecting statistics about association football. The foundation aims to build an exhaustive archive of football-related information from around the world.
