Christopher Green served as mayor and first trustee of Sacramento, California, from years 1872 to 1877. He was Sacramento's 14th mayor and its 12th elected mayor. Central Pacific Railway Company
The Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) was a rail company chartered by U.S. Congress in 1862 to build a railroad eastwards from Sacramento, California, to complete the western part of the "First transcontinental railroad" in North America. Incorporated in 1861, CPRR ceased operation in 1885 when it was acquired by Southern Pacific Railroad as a leased line. Following the completion of the Pacific Railroad Surveys in 1855, several national proposals to build a transcontinental railroad failed because of the energy consumed by political disputes over slavery. With the secession of the South in 1861, the modernizers in the Republican Party controlled the US Congress. They passed legislation in 1862 authorizing the central rail route with financing in the form of land grants and government railroad bond, which were all eventually repaid with interest. Jabez Turner (1828–1899) was a mayor of Sacramento, California. Biography He was born on , the seventh of fourteen children of Puritan farmers George and Amy Turner in the village of Warkton near Kettering in Northamptonshire. Originally apprenticed as a carpenter, he left England for America with his wife Elizabeth in 1852 and worked in rail-road shops in Syracuse, Hamilton, Grand Rapids, Torch Lake and Sturgeon Bay, before migrating to California via the Panama Canal in 1864, where he was employed in the wood-working section of the San Francisco and Alameda Railroad (later part of the Central Pacific Railroad Company) until 1871, when he was transferred to the shops in Sacramento. He was elected mayor of that city in March 1878, on what was known as the State Workingmen's ticket, and served for three years; his administration was a progressive but non-partisan one, with many reforms and improvements being put in operation under his direction.
