Christopher F Foss
Christopher Frank Foss (mostly written Christopher F Foss; born 8 April 1946) is a British military information author. Between 1970 and 2017, he worked for the military information publisher Jane's Information Group as editor of ''Janes Armour and Artillery'', ''Jane’s Armoured Fighting Vehicles'', ''Jane's AFV System Upgrades'' and co-editor of other Jane's editions such as ''Jane’s Artillery and Air Defence'' and ''Jane's Military Vehicles and Logistics''. After stepping back in late 2017, Foss stayed on as a Consulting Editor with Janes for ''Jane's Defence Weekly'' and ''Jane's International Defence Review'' until late 2021. Since then he has continued writing articles for other military information publishers such as Shepard Media. Janes is a global open-source intelligence company specialising in military, national security, aerospace and transport topics, whose name derives from British author Fred T. Jane. History Jane's Information Group was founded in 1898 by Fred T. Jane, who had begun sketching ships as an enthusiast naval artist while living in Portsmouth. This gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing of Jane's Fighting Ships, ''All the World's Fighting Ships'' (1898). The company then gradually branched out into other areas of military expertise. The Fortress Study Group is a charity registered in the UK with an international membership. Its purpose is advancing the study of post-medieval artillery fortifications throughout the World. The Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) is an international authority file. It is a joint project of several national libraries, operated by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). History Discussions about having a joint international authority started in the late 1990s. After several failed attempts to develop a unique joint authority file, the new idea was to link existing national authorities. This would present all the benefits of a standard file without requiring a significant investment of time and expense in the process.
