Christina Scherwin
Christina Scherwin (born 11 July 1976) is a Danish javelin thrower. Scherwin threw the javelin at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics and the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. Her biggest success was at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, where she threw the javelin 63.43 meters, placing fourth overall in the event. She finished second at the 2003 World University games in Daegu, sixth at the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monaco, fifth at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg, and third at the 2006 World Athletics Final in Stuttgart. In her junior years she placed 6th at the 1993 European Junior Championships and 5th at the 1994 World Junior Championships. She holds the current Danish record with 64.83 meters, achieved at the 2006 World Athletics Final in September 2006. She also holds the current NCAA DIV III record set back in 2003. A javelin is a light spear designed primarily to be thrown, historically as a ranged weapon, but today predominantly for sport. The javelin is almost always thrown by hand, unlike the sling, bow, and crossbow, which launch projectiles with the aid of a hand-held mechanism. However, devices do exist to assist the javelin thrower in achieving greater distance, such as spear-throwers or the amentum. A warrior or soldier armed primarily with one or more javelins is a javelineer. The word javelin comes from Middle English and it derives from Old French ''javelin'', a diminutive of ''javelot'', which meant spear. The word ''javelot'' probably originated from one of the Celtic languages. Prehistory There is archaeological evidence that javelins and throwing sticks were already in use by the last phase of the Lower Paleolithic. The women's javelin throw at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 19–21 August at the Beijing National Stadium. The qualifying standards were 60.50 m (A standard) and 56.00 m (B standard). Mariya Abakumova held the lead from her first throw, with Barbora Špotáková the only other competitor within 3 metres. Abakumova improved to 70.78 on her fourth throw. Christina Obergföll took third place, and Goldie Sayers took fourth (with a British national record); both of these positions were gained from their first round throws with no improvement thereafter. Then Špotáková threw 71.42 on her final throw to win the gold medal, with Abakumova taking silver. Eight years after the competition, the IOC retested samples from the event in connection with the Russian doping scandal. Mariya Abakumova tested positive for chlorodehydromethyltestosterone (turinabol), so she was disqualified and stripped of her silver medal, which was reallocated to Christina Obergföll. Athletics at the 2008 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the games, from August 15 to August 24, 2008, at the Beijing National Stadium. The Olympic sport of athletics is split into four distinct sets of events: track and field events, road running events, and racewalking events. Both men and women had very similar schedules of events. Men competed in 24 events and women in 23, as their schedule lacked the 50 km race walk. In addition, both the men's 110 m hurdles and decathlon are reflected in the women's schedule by the 100 m hurdles and heptathlon, respectively. The Olympic record was broken in 17 returning events.
