The Christian Democratic Appeal ( , CDA) is a Christian democracy, Christian democratic and Conservatism, conservative List of political parties in the Netherlands, political party in the Netherlands. Formed as a federation in 1975 by the Catholic People's Party, the Anti-Revolutionary Party, and the Christian Historical Union, it first participated in a general election in 1977 and unified into a single party in 1980. The party dominated Dutch politics from 1977 to 1994, becoming the largest party all but twice, with leaders Dries van Agt and Ruud Lubbers serving as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, prime minister. The party faced a major defeat in the 1994 Dutch general election, 1994 general election, after which the first two cabinets without its participation were formed. Henri Bontenbal
Hendrik "Henri" Bontenbal (; born 10 November 1982) is a Dutch politician and energy consultant who has served in the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives since January 2022. He has been the Leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal, leader of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) since August 2023. Before he became a member of parliament, Bontenbal worked in the energy sector and advised the CDA on energy issues. He participated in the 2021 Dutch general election, 2021 general election but failed to be directly elected. In June 2021, he was first appointed to the House of Representatives as the temporary replacement of Pieter Omtzigt. He became a permanent member of parliament in January 2022 after having also replaced during his sick leave. Ruud Lubbers
Rudolphus Franciscus Marie "Ruud" Lubbers (; 7 May 1939 – 14 February 2018) was a Dutch politician, diplomat and businessman who served as prime minister of the Netherlands from 1982 to 1994, and as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2001 to 2005. He was a member of the Catholic People's Party (KVP), which later merged to become the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party. Lubbers studied Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics obtaining a Master of Science degree and worked as a corporate director for the manufacturing company Hollandia in Rotterdam from April 1963 until May 1973 and as trade association executive for the Christian Employers' Association (NCW) from January 1965 until May 1973. Dries Van Agt
Andreas Antonius Maria "Dries" van Agt (; 2 February 1931 – 5 February 2024) was a Dutch politician, jurist and diplomat who served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from 19 December 1977 until 4 November 1982. He was a prominent leader of the Catholic People's Party (KVP) and later its successor party, the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA). Van Agt was known for his abilities as a skilled debater and negotiator. The country has a multi-party system with numerous political parties, and any one party has little chance of gaining power alone; parties work with each other to form coalition governments. The Christian Democratic Youth Appeal ( Dutch: Christen-Democratische Jongeren Appèl), officially abbreviated as CDJA, is the youth organisation of the political party Christian Democratic Appeal in the Netherlands. It came about via the merging of the political youth organisations ARJOS, CHJO and the KVP-jongerenorganisatie. The organisation is affiliated with Christian Democrats locally, nationally and internationally. There are 25 divisions active of the CDJA. These organisations are primarily concerned with provincial and local politics. The CDJA is involved not only with politics, but also is involved in programmes to increase mutual awareness and connectedness of CDJA youth throughout the organisation.
