Chowhound (or chowhound.com) is an American based food website launched in 1997. It changed ownership in 2006 and 2020, with its third owner suspending the website in March 2022. In October 2023, Static Media purchased the operation, reactivating the website in November 2023. History Chowhound was a popular online food community founded by jazz trombonist and food writer Jim Leff and Bob Okumura in 1997, known for its user base of food fanatics. Chowhound was formed in a very different cultural era, before Americans had a mainstream interest in seeking out regional delicacies and local favorites. As such, Chowhound served a very particular user base that was seeking delicious, regional and hard to find foods outside of the mainstream culture. Static Media Inc., the business name of 7Hops.com Inc., is an American internet company established in 2012, incorporated in Delaware, and based in Indianapolis. It operates ZergNet, a content recommendation business that promotes paid content across their network of brands. Most sites that the company owns use the same website model and design, sometimes dubbed " infinite scroll", whereby content is loaded continuously as the user scrolls down. For example, scrolling down on the homepage loads more articles in perpetuity (until the user reaches the very first article written for the site). Scrolling down on individual articles also does not reach the page footer, instead loading a different, related article, so the user can continue reading content from the site indefinitely without needing to click a new link. Jonathan Gold
Jonathan Gold (July 28, 1960 – July 21, 2018) was an American food and music critic. He was for many years the chief food critic for the ''Los Angeles Times'' and also wrote for ''LA Weekly'' and ''Gourmet'', in addition to serving as a regular contributor on KCRW's ''Good Food'' radio program. Gold often chose small, traditional immigrant restaurants for his reviews, although he covered all types of cuisine. In 2007, while writing for the ''LA Weekly'', he became the first food critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Robert Sietsema is an American restaurant critic. He wrote reviews and articles for the ''Village Voice'' from 1993 to 2013. He has also contributed to ''Gourmet'' magazine. After being let go from the ''Voice'' in a round of downsizing, he was hired the following week by ''Eater'', the New York City-based food website, as a feature writer before moving into the role of senior food critic. In December 2024, he was laid off from ''Eater'' as part of a round of downsizing. Biography Of Dutch descent, Sietsema is from the Midwest.
