Chondrostoma Turnai
'''' (from the Ancient Greek roots (''khondros'') 'lump' + (''stoma'') 'mouth' = 'lump-mouth') is a genus of ray-finned fish in the family Leuciscidae. They are commonly known as nases, although this term is also used locally to denote particular species, most frequently the common nase (''C. nasus''). The common name refers to the protruding upper jaw of these fishes; it is derived from the German term ''Nase'' 'nose'. Several species have a very restricted range. Some of these endemics are very rare nowadays, and at least one species is globally extinct. Systematics In 2007 it was determined that the presumed monophyletic group consisted of six at least partly independent lineages of Leuciscinae, meaning that the rasping feeding apparatus evolved more than once. It was proposed to split the genus in six in consequence: '' Achondrostoma'', ''Chondrostoma'', ''Iberochondrostoma'', ''Pseudochondrostoma'', ''Protochondrostoma'' and ''Parachondrostoma''. But at least ''Achondr ...

Common Nase
The common nase (''Chondrostoma nasus'') is a European potamodromous cyprinid fish. It is often simply called the nase, but that can refer to any species of its genus '' Chondrostoma''. Another name is sneep. Distribution The nase is found naturally in drainages of the Black Sea (Danube, Dniestr, Southern Bug, Dniepr), the southern Baltic Sea ( Nieman, Odra, Vistula) and the southern North Sea (to Meuse in the west). Moreover, it has been introduced to the Rhône, Loire, Hérault, and Soca/Isonzo (Italy, Slovenia) drainages. It is a migratory fish. Appearance The nase has a spindle shaped physique, with a blue-grey metallic-coloured scales and orange tail. It has relatively sharp lower lip. Generally, the fish range from in length, and weigh about . However, specimens have been recorded up to long and in weight. The maximum recorded life span of the fish is 15 years. Biology This gregarious species is found in deep water with a fast current, often in the back wate ...

Species
A species () is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction. It is the basic unit of Taxonomy (biology), classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. Other ways of defining species include their karyotype, DNA sequence, morphology (biology), morphology, behaviour, or ecological niche. In addition, palaeontologists use the concept of the chronospecies since fossil reproduction cannot be examined. The most recent rigorous estimate for the total number of species of eukaryotes is between 8 and 8.7 million. About 14% of these had been described by 2011. All species (except viruses) are given a binomial nomenclature, two-part name, a "binomen". The first part of a binomen is the name of a genus to which the species belongs. The second part is called the specific name (zoology), specific name or the specific ...

This species in this genus are found mostly in Spain with one species entering France. Species There are currently four recognized species in this genus: * '' Parachondrostoma arrigonis'' ( Steindachner, 1866) (Júcar nase) * '' Parachondrostoma miegii'' ( Steindachner, 1866) (Ebro nase) * '' Parachondrostoma toxostoma'' ( Vallot, 1837) (French nase) * '' Parachondrostoma turiense'' (Elvira, 1987) (Turia nase) Conservation According to the IUCN, ''Parachondrostoma turiense'' is an endangered species and ''Parachondrostoma arrigonis'' is critically endangered An IUCN Red List critically endangered (CR or sometimes CE) species is one that has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Protochondrostoma
The South European nase (''Protochondrostoma genei'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, Eurasian minnows and related species. It is the only species in the monospecific genus ''Protochondrostoma''. This species is found in Italy and Slovenia. Taxonomy The South European nase was first formally described as ''Leuciscis genei'' in 1839 by the French biologist and art collector Charles Lucien Bonaparte with its type locality given as "Piedmont Lakes" in Italy. It is now classified as the only species in the genus ''Protochondrostoma'' within the subfamily Leuciscinae of the family Leuciscidae. The genus was proposed in 2007 when a number of southern European species were split from '' Chondrostoma'' on the basis of genetic evidence and reclassified into the genera '' Achondrostoma'', ''Iberochondrostoma'', '' Pseudochondrostoma'', ''Protochondrostoma'' and '' Parachondrostoma''. With this taxon being the most ...

Pseudochondrostoma
''Pseudochondrostoma'' is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, Eurasian minnows and related species. The fishes in this genus occur in the Iberian Peninsula. They are commonly known as the straight-mouth nases. Taxonomy ''Pseudochondrostoma'' was first proposed as a genus in 2007 by Joana Isabel Robalo, Vítor Carvalho Almada, André Levy Coelho and Ignacio Doadrio Villarejo with ''Chondrostoma polylepis'' designated as the type species. ''C. polylepis'' was first formally described in 1864 by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner with its type locality given as Crato, Portugal. Robalo ''et al'' proposed the genus ''Pseudochondrostoma'' when they reviewed the genus '' Chondrostoma'' and found that in the north and central Mediterranean the taxa previoulsy included in ''Chondrostoma'' should be placed in new genera. The authors proposed that these taxa be transferred into the genera '' Achondrostoma'', ' ...

Achondrostoma
''Achondrostoma'' is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Leuciscidae, the daces and minnows. It is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. The genus was erected in 2007 for three fish separated from genus '' Chondrostoma'' on the basis of genetic evidence. Later that year a population of '' Iberochondrostoma lemmingii'' was separated on the basis of morphological and phylogenetic data and described as the fourth species of ''Achondrostoma'', though this move was later reversed. Species Species include: * '' Achondrostoma arcasii'' ( Steindachner, 1866) * '' Achondrostoma asturicense'' Doadrio, Casal-López & Perea, 2023 * '' Achondrostoma garzonorum'' Doadrio, Casal-López & Perea, 2023 * '' Achondrostoma numantinum'' Doadrio, Casal-López & Perea, 2023 * '' Achondrostoma occidentale'' ( Robalo, Almada, Sousa Santos, Moreira & Doadrio, 2005) * '' Achondrostoma oligolepis'' (Robalo, Doadrio, Almada & Kottelat, 2005) * '' Achondrostoma salmantinum'' Doadrio & Elvira Elvira i ...

Convergent Evolution
Convergent evolution is the independent evolution of similar features in species of different periods or epochs in time. Convergent evolution creates analogous structures that have similar form or function but were not present in the last common ancestor of those groups. The cladistic term for the same phenomenon is Cladogram#Homoplasies, homoplasy. The recurrent evolution of flight is a classic example, as flying pterygota, insects, birds, pterosaurs, and bats have independently evolved the useful capacity of flight. Functionally similar features that have arisen through convergent evolution are ''analogous'', whereas ''homology (biology), homologous'' structures or traits have a common origin but can have dissimilar functions. Bird, bat, and pterosaur wings are analogous structures, but their forelimbs are homologous, sharing an ancestral state despite serving different functions. The opposite of convergence is divergent evolution, where related species evolve different trai ...
