Chockie, Oklahoma
Chockie (formerly ''Chickiechockie'') is an unincorporated community 11 miles northeast of Stringtown, in Atoka County, Oklahoma, United States. A post office was established at Chickiechockie, Indian Territory on June 17, 1891. Its name was changed to Chockie on February 8, 1904. The post office closed on March 15, 1905. The post office was three miles south of Limestone Gap. At the time of its founding, the community was located in Atoka County, Choctaw Nation. On August 30, 1916 a nearby post office, Rich, was renamed Chockie. It was discontinued on November 30, 1934. The community was named for Chickie and Chockie, the two daughters of Charles LeFlore. Stringtown is a town in Atoka County, Oklahoma, Atoka County, Oklahoma, United States. Atoka County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,143. Its county seat is Atoka. The county was formed before statehood from Choctaw Lands, and its name honors a Choctaw Chief named Atoka. The county is part of Choctaw Nation reservation lands. History The area forming Atoka County was part of the Choctaw Nation after the tribe was forced to relocate in the early 1830s to Indian Territory from its home in the Southeastern United States. Atoka County, Choctaw Nation
Atoka County was a political subdivision of the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory, prior to Oklahoma being admitted as a state. The county formed part of the Nation's Pushmataha District, or Third District, one of three administrative and judicial provinces called districts. History The county was created in 1850 as Shappaway County, a name it held until 1854. Shappaway was a corruption of the Chickasaw or Choctaw words, ''shapah'', or “flag,” and ''welih'', “to hold up to view.” In late 1854 the General Council of the Choctaw Nation renamed it Atoka County in honor of Captain William Atoka. Lee Cruce
Lee Cruce (July 8, 1863 – January 16, 1933) was an American lawyer, banker and the second governor of Oklahoma. Losing to Charles N. Haskell in the 1907 Democratic primary election to serve as the first governor of Oklahoma, Cruce successfully campaigned to succeed Haskell to serve as the second governor of Oklahoma. As governor, Cruce was responsible for the establishment of the Oklahoma Department of Highways and the Oklahoma State Capitol. He worked hard to enforce prohibitions on alcohol and gambling, going so far as to use the state militia to stop horse racing. He was succeeded by Robert L. Williams. Born in Kentucky, Cruce worked as a lawyer, a banker, and a municipal official before his election as governor. After finishing his term as governor, he worked in the private sector and made an unsuccessful bid for the United States Senate.
