Chkalov Transpolar Flight Monument
The Chkalov Transpolar Flight Monument, or simply Chkalov Monument, is a monument located at Pearson Field, in Vancouver, Washington near the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The monument commemorates , and was dedicated on June 20, 1975 with copilot Georgy Baidukov and navigator Alexander Belyakov in attendance; pilot Valery Chkalov was killed during a test flight in 1938, the year after the flight. The monument was the first ever erected in the United States to commemorate an achievement of the Soviet Union. The monument was originally erected on the south side of the airfield, along Washington State Route 14. The Pearson Air Museum is a place-based aviation museum at Pearson Field in Vancouver, Washington, USA. Managed by the National Park Service as part of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, museum exhibits provide an opportunity for visitors to explore aviation history tied to Pearson Field and Vancouver Barracks. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is a United States National Historic Site located in the states of Washington and Oregon. The National Historic Site consists of two units, one located on the site of Fort Vancouver in modern-day Vancouver, Washington; the other being the former residence of John McLoughlin in Oregon City, Oregon. The two sites were separately given national historic designation in the 1940s. Pearson Field also once known as Pearson Airpark, is a city-owned municipal airport located one mile (2 km) southeast of the central business district of Vancouver, a city in Clark County, Washington, United States. Alexander Vasilyevich Belyakov
Alexander Vasilyevich Belyakov (; – 28 November 1982) was a Soviet flight navigator who, together with command pilot Valery Chkalov and co-pilot Georgy Baydukov, set a record for the longest uninterrupted flight in 1936 and made , flying from Moscow to Vancouver, Washington. He was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union and served as a lieutenant general of the Soviet Air Forces. Valery Chkalov
Valery Pavlovich Chkalov (; ; – 15 December 1938) was a test pilot awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (1936). Early life Chkalov was born to a Russian family in 1904 in the upper Volga region, the town of Chkalovsk, Russia, Vasilyevo (the town is now named Chkalovsk in his honour), which lies near Nizhny Novgorod. He was the son of a ship boiler-maker at the Vasselyevo Ship Yard on the River Volga. His mother died when he was six years old. Chkalov studied in the technical school in Cherepovets but later returned to his home town to work as an apprentice in the shipyard alongside his father. State Route 14 (SR 14) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Washington. The highway travels east-west on the north side of the Columbia River, opposite Interstate 84 (I-84) to the south in Oregon.
