Chithralaya
Chithralaya () also spelt Chitralaya, is an Indian film production company founded in the early 1960s. It produced films in Tamil and Hindi, most of them directed by C. V. Sridhar. The company was founded by Sridhar, screenwriter Gopu (who later became known as Chithralaya Gopu), cinematographer A. Vincent and still photographer Tiruchi Arunachalam. History After making films for Venus Studios, in the early 1960s Sridhar founded Chithralaya to make the kind of films he wanted. The company's logo featured a boatman and a woman travelling on a boat with the tagline, "Kadal Alayil Engal Siriya Thoni, Kalai Ulagil Engal Pudhiya Baani". When discussing with his associates what should be the company's first film, Sridhar devised the story of ''Nenjil Or Aalayam'' but later decided the company's first film should not be a tragedy and devised the lighter '' Thennilavu''. Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa
''Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa'' () is a 1971 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film, directed by N. S. Chakravarthi in his debut, produced by Sridhar and written by Gopu. The film features an ensemble cast including Ravichandran, Nagesh, Thengai Srinivasan, Moorthy, Mali, Kanchana, Rama Prabha, Sachu, Sundari Bai and Vijaya Chandrika. It was released on 14 January 1971. The film was remade in Telugu as ''Vintha Illu Santha Gola'' (1976). Plot Ravi lives in a bungalow that was bought by his father recently, so that Ravi can study in the city. Ravi stays with his three other bachelor friends, Mani, Raju and Mahalingam alias Mali. Raju works in a sports store which is a mundane job. Mani works as an assistant manager in a company while Mali works as a mechanic. Thennilavu
''Thennilavu'' ( ) is a 1961 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Sridhar. It stars Gemini Ganesan (credited as Ganesh) and Vyjayanthimala, with K. A. Thangavelu, M. N. Nambiar, M. Saroja and Vasanthi in supporting roles. The film's plot is about a man who, due to mistaken identity, is appointed as a manager by a young woman for her father's honeymoon in Kashmir. The man and the woman fall in love but things go awry when the real manager arrives in Kashmir. ''Thennilavu'' is the first film Sridhar produced through his production company Chithralaya; it is also the first South Indian film to be made in Jammu and Kashmir; additional filming took place in Madras (now Chennai) and Kodaikanal. ''Kadhalikka Neramillai'' () is a 1964 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film produced and directed by C. V. Sridhar, who also conceived and co-wrote its script with Chitralaya Gopu. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Balaiah, Muthuraman, Nagesh, Rajasree, Sachu, Ravichandran and Kanchana. The latter two made their acting debut with this film. ''Avalukendru Or Manam'' () is a 1971 Indian Tamil-language film romantic drama film produced, written and directed by Sridhar. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, Muthuraman, Bharathi and Kanchana. It revolves around two women who fall in love with the same man. ''Avalukendru Or Manam'' was simultaneously made in Hindi as '' Duniya Kya Jaane'', with a largely different cast, though Bharathi repeated her role. ''Nenjirukkum Varai'' () is a 1967 Indian Tamil-language film, directed and produced by C. V. Sridhar. The film stars Sivaji Ganesan, Muthuraman, Gopalakrishnan, K. R. Vijaya and Geetanjali. It revolves around a man struggling with poverty, falling in love with his house owner's daughter. Sridhar initially decided to make ''Nenjirukkum Varai'' as revolving around the theme of war between India and Pakistan; the story was dropped after Sridhar learnt that Lal Bahadur Shastri and Muhammad Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration. Retaining the title, he developed a new story inspired by the Bengali play ''Shudha'' (). The film was shot in black-and-white to emphasise the central theme of poverty, and none of the cast members applied make-up for much of the film. ''Vennira Aadai'' () is a 1965 Indian Tamil-language romance film, co-written, produced and directed by Sridhar. The film stars Jayalalithaa, Nirmala, Shylashri, Srikanth and Moorthy, all in their Tamil cinema debut. It was released on 14 April 1965 and became a success. Plot Chandrasekhar "Chandru" is a famous psychiatrist and has earned much praise from his mentor and people in the town. He is in love with Geetha. Chithralaya Gopu
Sadagopan (better known as Chitralaya Gopu) is an Indian screenwriter and director who works in the Tamil cinema. He has written nearly 60 films, and directed 27 of them. He scripted dramatic films such as '' Moondru Dheivangal'' and '' Shanti Nilayam'' and comedies such as '' Kadhalikka Neramillai'', '' Galatta Kalyanam'', '' Patti Sollai Thattathe'' and '' Uttharavindri Ulle Vaa''. Career C. V. Sridhar and Sadagopan were childhood friends since their schooldays in St. Joseph's High School, Chengalpattu. ''Nenjil Or Aalayam'' () is a 1962 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film directed, produced and written by C. V. Sridhar. The film stars Kalyan Kumar, Devika and R. Muthuraman while Nagesh, Manorama and Kutty Padmini play supporting roles. The original soundtrack album and background score were composed by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy, while the lyrics for the songs were written by Kannadasan. The film revolves around a young woman named Seetha, her husband Venu and Murali, who was Seetha's lover. Due to his tenure overseas, Seetha's parents force her to marry another person. ''Thanthu Vitten Ennai'' () is a 1991 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film starring Vikram and Rohini. This was the last film directed by C. V. Sridhar. It was released on 21 June 1991. Plot The story revolves around two graduates Rajasekhar and Surya who meet up in an accidental Interview. They develop love towards each other. Will destiny unite them or not makes the rest of story. ''Oru Odai Nadhiyagirathu'' () is a 1983 Indian Tamil-language film, written, produced and directed by C. V. Sridhar and starring Raghuvaran. The female leads were Sumalatha and Manochitra (daughter of T. S. Balaiah). The film was released on 2 December 1983. Plot Raghuvaran visits his friend's place on a tour and one night he happens to see a woman while returning from a party. On that rainy night, he rapes her and leaves. He speaks about this incident to his friend and his friend advises him not to search for that girl, as she would have forgotten it. Haunted by guilty feelings, Raghuvaran searches for her later, but is unable to find her. Meanwhile, the woman becomes pregnant and, unable to come to terms with this incident, leaves that place with her father. ''Alaigal'' () is a 1973 Indian Tamil-language film written, produced and directed by Sridhar. The film stars Vishnuvardhan and Chandrakala. It was the first Tamil film of Vishnuvardhan. Plot Cast Production After the average response to his previous film '' Avalukendru Or Manam'' (1971), Sridhar decided to make a Tamil- Telugu bilingual titled ''Thulasi'' () with A. V. M. Rajan starring in Tamil and Sobhan Babu in Telugu. Sridhar developed a story from the Hindi film '' Aadmi'' (1939) and the American film ''Waterloo Bridge'' (1931), retaining only the basic premise. However, after canning , he decided to drop the film, uncertain whether the audience would accept a film with anti-sentimental elements.
