Chinese Caribbean People
Chinese Caribbean people (sometimes Sino-Caribbean people ) are people who are of predominately of Han Chinese ethnic origins living throughout the Caribbean. There are small but significant populations of Chinese and their descendants in all countries of the Greater Antilles. This diaspora migrants stretch back as far back as the mid-19th century. They are all part of the large global Chinese diaspora known as Overseas Chinese. Chinese Trinidadian And Tobagonian
Chinese Trinidadians and Tobagonians (sometimes Sino-Trinidadians and Tobagonians or Chinese Trinbagonians) are Trinidadians and Tobagonians of Han Chinese ancestry. The group includes people from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Overseas Chinese who have immigrated to Trinidad and Tobago and their descendants, including those who have emigrated to other countries. The term is usually applied both to people of mixed and unmixed Chinese ancestry, although the former usually appear as mixed race in census figures. Chinese settlement began in 1806. Between 1853 and 1866 2,645 Chinese immigrants arrived in Trinidad as indentured labour for the sugar and cacao plantations. Immigration peaked in the first half of the twentieth century, but was dramatically lowered after the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949. Chinese Immigration To Puerto Rico
Large-scale Chinese immigration to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean began during the 19th century. Chinese immigrants had to face different obstacles that prohibited or restricted their entry in Puerto Rico. When Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony, the Spanish government did encourage settlers of non-Hispanic origin. Although the Spanish government changed its policy with the passage of the Royal Decree of Graces of 1815, Royal Decree of Graces (Real Cédula de Gracias) of 1815, the decree was intended to attract non-Hispanic Europeans who were willing to swear their allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church, not non-Christian Asians. Chinese Jamaicans
Chinese Jamaicans are Jamaicans of Chinese ancestry, who include descendants of migrants from China to Jamaica. Early migrants came in the 19th century; there was another wave of migration in the 1980s and 1990s. Many descendants of early migrants have moved abroad, primarily to Canada and the United States. Most Chinese Jamaicans are Hakka and many can trace their origin to the indentured Chinese laborers who came to Jamaica from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. According to one study, approximately 4% of Jamaican men have a direct Chinese paternal ancestor. Chinese Haitians
Chinese Haitians ( French: ''Sino-Haïtien''; ) are Haitians of Chinese ancestry who immigrated to or were born in Haiti. There are about 230 Chinese people living in Haiti as of 2010. The descendants that intermarried with other races are called Marabou. Overview Many Chinese people living in Haiti are businessmen in governmental or other businesses while there are other Chinese nationals working in Haitian companies as well. With last names like Wu, Wah, Fung, Fong-Ging, Fungcap, were the first known Chinese families arrived in Haiti in the late 1890s, fleeing crumbling dynasties, while continuous waves came into Haiti in the 1970s and 1980s with them mostly coming from Taiwan. Chinese Cubans
Chinese Cubans () are Cubans of full or mixed Chinese ancestry who were born in or have immigrated to Cuba. They are part of the ethnic Chinese diaspora (or Overseas Chinese). The population peaked to around 60,000 in the 1950s, but almost entirely disappeared in the aftermath of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, with the population largely disappearing to Miami, Florida or elsewhere in Latin America. Greater Antilles
The Greater Antilles is a grouping of the larger islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, together with Navassa Island and the Cayman Islands.
