China and San Marino established consular-level relations on 6 May 1971 and ambassador-level relations on 5 July 1991. On 6 May 2021, President of the People's Republic of China, Chinese President and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, General Secretary of the Communist Party Xi Jinping, and Sammarinese Captains Regent Gian Carlo Venturini and Marco Nicolini exchanged messages of congratulations in honor of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term.
