Chimmanakali
''Chimmanakali'' is an art form traditional to the Pulaya tribe of north Kerala, South India. ''Chimmanam'' translates roughly to humor or chat. Chimmanakali is associated with ''Garbhabali,'' also known as Kannal Kalampattu. The song sung for this play is known as ''chothiyum pidiym pattu''. The performers often make humorous speeches. Pulaya
The Pulayar (also Pulaya, Pulayas, Cherumar, Cheramar, and Cheraman) is a caste group mostly found in modern-day Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka and historically in Tamil Nadu. They are classified as a Scheduled Caste under India's reservation system in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Traditions Pulayars are noted for their music, craftsmanship, and for certain dances which include ''Kōlam-thullal'', a mask dance which is part of their exorcism rituals, as well as the Mudi-āttam or hair-dance which has its origins in a fertility ritual. The folk dance Chozhikali is performed by the Pulayar community of central Kerala. Demography According to the 2011 Census, the Pulayan population in Kerala was 1,338,008. Kerala Folklore Academy
Kerala Folklore Academy is an autonomous center for cultural affairs constituted by the Government of Kerala and works under the Department of Cultural Affairs. It was established on 28 June 1995 to promote and project the traditional art forms of Kerala. It is located at Chirakkal, Kannur. The academy brings out a quarterly to promote the study and research in folklore, and has published more than 25 books on the folklore of Kerala. It also produced a book about 100 folk art forms of Kerala and two dictionaries, one on Chavittu Nadakam and another on Beary language. History The institution was formed under the Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration act of 1955. Dances Of India
Dance in India comprises numerous styles of dances, generally classified as classical or folk.
