"Chimes at Midnight" is a 1970 Australian TV play by John Croyston which aired on the ABC. It was directed by Eric Tayler. It was the last in a series of TV plays on the ABC called ''Australian Plays'' and aired 26 July 1970. ''Australian Plays'' is a 1969-1970 Australian anthology TV drama series that aired on the ABC. It consisted of six original Australian dramas. It was the first Australian drama play since ''Lucullus'' in Sydney and '' Cobwebs in Concrete'' in Melbourne. It was the first Australian anthology series since ''Australian Playhouse'' and was described by the ABC as "representative of contemporary Australian writers and the development of Australian television drama today." It was produced by Eric Taylor. It was meant to be followed by a series ''Company of Eight'' which will have a regular repertory company of eight actors. Australian TV drama was relatively rare at the time. Eric Tayler
Eric Archdale Tayler (4 December 1921 – 6 August 1997) was a New Zealand-born television producer, director and actor, best known for his work for the BBC in the United Kingdom and the ABC in Australia. Biography Tayler was born in Hamilton, New Zealand, and educated at Auckland Grammar School. He served in the New Zealand Army during World War II as part of the second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In 1947, Tayler moved to London, where he attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) from 1947 to 1950, which was where he met his wife, Welsh-Australian actress Lyn James, with whom he had two children. In 1955, Tayler joined the drama department of the BBC, working on such programmes as ''Maigret'', ''Z-Cars'' and a 1962 adaptation of ''Oliver Twist''. In 1965, Tayler joined the Australian Broadcasting Commission as a producer, where he produced several drama series including ''Contrabandits''. John Croyston
John Croyston (7 March 1933 – 23 May 2007) was an Australian writer, radio producer and director. Born in the Sydney suburb of Enfield on 7 March 1933, Croyston moved with his family to the Georges River following the outbreak of WWII. He completed his secondary education at Hurlstone Agricultural High School, then studied at the University of Sydney. He worked as a teacher before going on to work at the ABC. He was a radio producer at the ABC from 1958 to 1964. He then moved into television. Croyston died in Greenwich, New South Wales on 23 May 2007. Patricia Mary Bishop (13 June 1946 – 28 March 2000) was an Australian actress, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, noted for her performances in theatre, film and television series.
