The Chief of Georgian Defence Forces ( ka, საქართველოს თავდაცვის ძალების მეთაური, tr) is a chief of defence and commander of the Defence Forces of Georgia, under the authority of the Government of Georgia. History The position was (re)introduced in accordance with the Georgian Law on Defence of 31 October 2018. It had its precursor —the Commander-in-Chief of the Army— in the Democratic Republic of Georgia from 1918 to 1921. From the 1990s until 2018 the Chief of the General Staff was the highest-ranking military officer in the Georgian military, chief military adviser to the President, and wartime commander of the Armed Forces of Georgia. Lieutenant general (Lt Gen, LTG and similar) is a military rank used in many countries. The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second-in-command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general. In modern armies, lieutenant general normally ranks immediately below general (or colonel general) and above major general; it is equivalent to the navy rank of vice admiral, and in air forces with a separate rank structure, it is equivalent to air marshal. Ilia Odishelidze ( ka, ილია ოდიშელიძე); , ''Ilya Zurabovich Odishelidze'') (25 March 1865 – c. 1924) was a Georgian military leader who had also served as a general of the Imperial Russian army. Biography Born in Georgia, then part of the Russian Empire, he graduated from the 3rd Alexander’s School (1887) and the General Staff Academy in St Petersburg (1894). The next ten years were spent in military work in various regions of the empire. He took part in the Russo-Japanese war (1904–1905) in the capacity of a chief of staff of the 6th Eastern Siberian Division.
