Chief Dominion Architect
Chief Dominion Architect was a position created in 1871 by the Government of Canada to help design public federal buildings across Canada. The role reported to the Minister of Public Works (Canada), Minister of Public Works. From World War II onwards to 1973 (renamed Chief Architect) the role was diminished with work being contracted out to third parties and finally replaced with a bureaucrat (Assistant Deputy Minister for Design and Construction, Minister of Public Works (Canada), Department of Public Works and now Assistant Deputy Minister for the Real Property Branch, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, Public Works and Government Services Canada) responsible for finding external architects instead. Province Of Canada
The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867. Its formation reflected recommendations made by John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, in the Report on the Affairs of British North America following the Rebellions of 1837–1838. The Act of Union 1840, passed on 23 July 1840 by the British Parliament and proclaimed by the Crown on 10 February 1841, merged the Colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada by abolishing their separate parliaments and replacing them with a single one with two houses, a Legislative Council as the upper chamber and the Legislative Assembly as the lower chamber. Frederick Preston Rubidge
Frederick Preston Rubidge, (10 March 1806 – 16 August 1897), was a surveyor and an architect. He was born in England and emigrated to Upper Canada around 1825 where he took his training. Rubidge first qualified as a provincial surveyor in 1831 and completed important surveys over the next few years. In 1841, the Board of Works of the Province of Canada (Public Works after 1846) was formed and he was among the initial employees. Much of his work involved design for public buildings. He held the title of assistant engineer but became known as architect for the department. He had various roles associated with the parliament and department buildings in Ottawa. One of the more intriguing projects concerned Rideau Hall, the former home of Thomas McKay, and its conversion to the official residence of the governor general of Canada. Joseph Charles Gustave Brault (1886–1954) was a Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1947 to 1952. As chief government architect he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. Richard Cotsman Wright (1860–1921) was a Canadians, Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1918-1927. As chief government architect he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. He embraced Chateauesque architecture and the Collegiate Gothic architecture. Career He was born in London, Ontario on 5 January 1860. He was educated in London, Ontario. He received private tutoring as an architect and construction engineer. Edgar Lewis Horwood (1868–1957) was a Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1915 to 1917. As chief government architect he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. David Ewart
David Ewart, ISO (18 February 1841 – 6 June 1921) was a Canadian architect who served as Chief Dominion Architect from 1896 to 1914. As chief government architect he was responsible for many of the federal buildings constructed in this period. He broke with the Neo-Gothic style adopted by his predecessors Thomas Seaton Scott and Thomas Fuller; rather he embraced the Baronial style exemplified in several important buildings. Personal Ewart was married to Jeanne Marie Doyen until her death in 1885 and then with Annie Sigsworth Simpson from 1887 to his death in 1921. His son John Albert Ewart was an acclaimed Ottawa architect.
