In American comic books published by Marvel Comics, a mutant is a human being that possesses a genetic trait called the X-gene. It causes the mutant to develop superhuman powers that manifest at puberty. Human mutants are sometimes referred to as a human subspecies ''Homo sapiens superior'' or simply ''Homo superior''. Mutants are the evolutionary progeny of ''Homo sapiens'', and are actually revealed to be the next stage in human evolution. The accuracy of this is the subject of much debate in the Marvel Universe. Puberty is the process of physical changes through which a child's body matures into an adult body capable of sexual reproduction. Atlas Comics was the 1950s comic book, comic-book publishing label that evolved into Marvel Comics. ''Journey into Mystery'' is an American comic book series initially published by Atlas Comics, then by its successor, Marvel Comics. Initially a horror comics anthology, it changed to giant-monster and science fiction stories in the late 1950s. Beginning with issue #83 (cover dated Aug. 1962), it ran the superhero feature " The Mighty Thor", created by writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and artist Jack Kirby, and inspired by the mythological Norse thunder god.
