The ILMOR-Chevrolet Indy V6 engine is a 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-6 racing engine, developed and produced by Ilmor Engineering for the IndyCar Series. Chevrolet has been a highly successful IndyCar Series engine supplier since 2012, scoring 100 IndyCar wins, 35 pole positions, 7 IndyCar Series driver's titles and 7 IndyCar Series manufacturer's titles. On November 12, 2010, Chevrolet confirmed their return to the IndyCar Series 2012 season after 6-year absence. Ilmor is a British independent high-performance auto racing, motor racing engineering company. It was founded by Mario Illien and Paul Morgan (engineer), Paul Morgan in November 1983. With manufacturing based in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, and maintenance offices in Plymouth, Michigan, the company supplies engines and consultancy to the IndyCar Series and MotoGP. Ilmor Engineering originally designed built and produced Champ Car, IndyCar engines for Chevrolet. Twin-turbo is a type of turbo layout in which two turbochargers are used to compress the intake fuel/air mixture (or intake air, in the case of a Direct fuel injection, direct-injection engine). A rev limiter is a device fitted in modern vehicles that have internal combustion engines. They are intended to protect an engine by restricting its maximum rotational speed, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Rev limiters are Engine control unit, pre-set by the engine manufacturer. There are also aftermarket units where a separate controller is installed using a custom RPM setting. 2012 IndyCar Series Season
The 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series was the 17th season of the IndyCar Series, and the 101st season of American open wheel racing. Its premier event was the 96th Indianapolis 500, held on Sunday, May 27. The series was sanctioned by IndyCar, and took place in three countries on two continents.
