Chester-le-Street Railway Station
Chester-le-Street is a railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which runs between and . The station is situated south of Newcastle, serving the market town of Chester-le-Street in County Durham, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. History The Team Valley Line of the North Eastern Railway, which connected Newton Hall Junction, near , with was authorised in 1848. However, the line was not opened until 2 March 1868, with the powers having been renewed in 1862. At first only freight trains used the route, but passenger services began on 1 December 1868, with the station opening on the same day. In the 1960s, the station was listed for closure as part of the Beeching Axe, which led to it being mentioned in the song ''Slow Train'' by Flanders and Swann. Chester-le-Street () is a market town in County Durham, England. It is located around north of Durham and is close to Newcastle. The town holds markets on Saturdays. In 2021, the town had a population of 23,555. The town's history is ancient; records date to a Roman-built fort called Concangis. The Roman fort is the ''Chester'' (from the Latin ''castra'') of the town's name; the ''Street'' refers to the paved Roman road that ran north–south through the town. The parish church of St Mary and St Cuthbert is where the body of St Cuthbert remained for 112 years (from 883 to 995 AD), before being transferred to Durham Cathedral. Tactile paving (also called tenji blocks, truncated domes, detectable warnings, tactile tiles, tactile ground surface indicators, tactile walking surface indicators, or detectable warning surfaces) is a system of textured ground surface indicators found at roadsides (such as at curb cuts), by and on stairs, and on railway station platforms, to assist pedestrians who are visually impaired. Tactile warnings provide a distinctive surface pattern of truncated domes, cones or bars, detectable by a long cane or underfoot, which are used to alert the vision-impaired of approaching streets and hazardous surface or grade changes. The station, situated east of Middlesbrough, serves the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains.
