Cheshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Cheshire is a former United Kingdom parliamentary constituency for the county of Cheshire. It was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. As a county palatine it was unrepresented in Parliament until the Chester and Cheshire (Constituencies) Act 1542 ( 34 & 35 Hen. 8. c. 13). Cheshire was represented by two knights of the shire from 1545, with only County Durham out of the English counties being left unrepresented after that. It was divided between the constituencies of North Cheshire and South Cheshire in 1832. Richard Hough (MP)
Richard Hough (5 November 1505 – 10 December 1574), of Leighton and Thornton Hough in the Wirral Hundred was an English landowner and politician. He was elected MP for Cheshire in 1558 under Mary I and after the accession of Elizabeth I was appointed a commissioner of the peace for Cheshire in 1562. Early life Hough was born at Leighton in the Wirral Hundred, the eldest son of Thomas Hough (died 1513) of Leighton and Thornton Hough and Catherine Grosvenor, daughter of Thomas Grosvenor of Eaton, Cheshire. He was six years old when his father died in June 1513, but nothing is known of his wardship, upbringing or education. Career He was in the service of Thomas Cromwell from around 1534 until 1540. Sir Richard Cotton (in or before 1497 – 1556), was a courtier in the court of Henry VIII of England. He came from Shropshire and began his career as a lawyer before entering the king's service. His elder brother George Cotton was in charge of the household of the king's son Henry, Duke of Richmond at Sheriff Hutton Castle, and Richard served there as comptroller. Edward Fitton (the Elder)
Sir Edward Fitton the Elder (31 March 1527 – 3 July 1579), was Lord President of Connaught and Thomond and Vice-Treasurer of Ireland. Biography Fitton was the eldest son of Sir Edward Fitton of Gawsworth (d. 1548) and Mary Harbottle, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Guiscard Harbottle of Horton, Northumberland. His father was knighted at the coronation of Anne Boleyn in May 1533. In the Parliament of 1553 he sat as knight of the shire for Cheshire. He was knighted by Sir Henry Sidney in 1566. With the establishment of provincial governments in Connaught and Munster, Fitton was appointed first Lord President of Connaught and Lord President of Thomond on 1 June 1569 arriving in Ireland in July and set up his seat at Michaelmas.
