Cherna (Arda)
The Cherna () is a 48 km long river in southern Bulgaria, a left tributary of the Arda (Maritsa tributary), Arda of the Maritsa drainage. The source of the river is the westernmost point of the whole Arda basin and springs in the Pereliksko–Prespanski Ridge of the western Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of 1,770 m, some 5 km southeast west of the village of Mugla, Bulgaria, Mugla. Throughout its course it flows eastwards in a narrow canyon-like valley, with a single wide section at the town of Smolyan. It flows into the Arda at an altitude of 128 m about 800 m south of the village of Leshtak. It drains the southeastern slopes of the highest section of the Pereliksko–Prespanski Ridge and the northern slopes of the Kaynadinski Ridge. Its drainage basin covers a territory of 259 km2, or 4.47% of the Arda's total. Rhodope Mountains
The Rhodopes (; , ; , ''Rodopi''; ) are a mountain range in Southeastern Europe, and the largest by area in Bulgaria, with over 83% of its area in the southern part of the country and the remainder in Greece. Golyam Perelik is its highest peak at . The mountain range gives its name to the terrestrial ecoregion Rodope montane mixed forests that belongs in the temperate broadleaf and mixed forests biome and the Palearctic realm. The region is particularly notable for its karst areas with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms, such as the Trigrad Gorge. A significant part of Bulgaria's hydropower resources are located in the western areas of the range. There are a number of hydro-cascades and dams used for electricity production, irrigation, and as tourist destinations. Name and mythology The name of the Rhodope Mountains is of Thracian origin.
