Cherkasy (, ) is a city in central Ukraine. Cherkasy serves as the administrative centre of Cherkasy Oblast as well as Cherkasy Raion within the oblast. Cherkasy has been known since the 13th century and played a great role in the history of Ukraine. Cherkasy Oblast (, ), also referred to as Cherkashchyna (, ) is an administrative divisions of Ukraine, oblast (province) in central Ukraine located along the Dnieper, Dnieper River. Cherkasy Raion () is a Raions of Ukraine, raion (district) of Cherkasy Oblast. It is located in the central part of Cherkasy oblast, and the center of the raion is the city of Cherkasy. Cherkasy Castle
Cherkasy Castle () is a former medieval wooden castle in Cherkasy, Ukraine built as a defense against enemies of the Golden Horde and later against Turks and Crimean Tatars. The city of Cherkasy grew up around the castle. The wooden castle was rebuilt in 1549. Today traces of the castle no longer exist. Kremenchuk Reservoir
The Kremenchuk Reservoir () is a reservoir on the Dnieper river in the Ukrainian oblasts of Poltava, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad, one of five of Dnieper reservoir cascade. Named after the city of Kremenchuk, the reservoir is primarily used for irrigation, flood control, fishing, and transport from the ports of Cherkasy and Svitlovodsk. It is the largest reservoir on the Dnieper river, with a length of 149 km, a width of 28 km, an area of 2,250 km2, an average depth of six meters, and a volume of 13.5 km3. The reservoir's water level is maintained by the dam of the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Power Plant, built between 1954 and 1959. Raions were created in a 1922 administrative reform of the Soviet Union, to which Ukraine, as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, belonged. In Ukraine, a hromada () is the main type of municipality and the third level Administrative divisions of Ukraine, local self-government in Ukraine. The current hromadas were established by the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine, Government of Ukraine on 12 June 2020. A municipality is designated ''urban hromada'' if its administration is located in a city; ''settlement hromada'' if it is located in a settlement (''selyshche''), and ''rural hromada'' if it is located in a village (Village#Ukraine, ''selo'') or a ''selyshche''.
