Chen Maiping
Chen Maiping (born November 4, 1952, in Changshu, Jiangsu) is a Chinese-Swedish writer and poet, known by the pen name Wan Zhi (). He has written mostly short stories, and has also translated literature from English and Swedish to Chinese. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chen was an avid contributor to the non-sanctioned, underground literature magazine '' Jintian'' (''Today''). For this, he became watched by the Chinese authorities, and since 1986 he is living in exile. After the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, he started ''Jintian'' for Chinese in exile and dissentients within China. Chen moved to Sweden in 1990. He has among other things taught Chinese at Stockholm University, and worked as a translator. He is also the vice president and secretary general of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre. Chen (surname)
Chen () is a common Chinese-language surname and one of the most common surnames in Asia. It is the most common surname in Taiwan (2010) and Singapore (2000). Chen is also the most common family name in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Macau, and Hong Kong. It is the most common surname in Xiamen, the ancestral hometown of many overseas Hoklo. PEN International (known as International PEN until 2010) is a worldwide association of writers, founded in London in 1921 to promote friendship and intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere. The association has autonomous International PEN centres in more than 100 countries. Other goals included: to emphasise the role of literature in the development of mutual understanding and world culture; to fight for freedom of expression; and to act as a powerful voice on behalf of writers harassed, imprisoned and sometimes killed for their views.
