Chelsea Arts District
The Chelsea Arts District, sometimes also called the West Chelsea Arts District or the Chelsea Gallery District is a region of Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City, that runs from 18th to 28th Street between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue that is known for its concentration of art galleries. It developed as part of the neighborhood's rezoning and shift in the international art market in the late 1990s and early 2000s. While galleries have relocated to other areas due to rising rents and the distance from the subway, new galleries have taken their place and the area remains an arts hub. Tenth Avenue (Manhattan)
Tenth Avenue, known as Amsterdam Avenue between 59th Street and 193rd Street, is a north-south thoroughfare on the West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It carries uptown (northbound) traffic as far as West 110th Street (also known as Cathedral Parkway), after which it continues as a two-way street. Geography Tenth Avenue begins a block below Gansevoort Street and Eleventh Avenue in the West Village / Meatpacking District. Eleventh Avenue is a north–south thoroughfare on the far West Side (Manhattan), West Side of the borough (New York City), borough of Manhattan in New York City, located near the Hudson River. An art gallery is a room or a building in which visual art is displayed. In Western cultures from the mid-15th century, a gallery was any long, narrow covered passage along a wall, first used in the sense of a place for art in the 1590s. Joseph Beuys
Joseph Heinrich Beuys ( ; ; 12 May 1921 – 23 January 1986) was a German artist, teacher, performance artist, and Aesthetics, art theorist whose work reflected concepts of humanism and sociology. With Heinrich Böll, , Caroline Tisdall, Robert McDowell, and Enrico Wolleb, Beuys created the Free International University for Creativity & Interdisciplinary Research (FIU). ''7000 OaksCity Forestation Instead of City Administration'' () is a work of land art by the German artist Joseph Beuys. It was first publicly presented in 1982 at documenta 7. The project With the help of volunteers, Beuys planted 7,000 oak trees over five years in Kassel, Germany, each with an accompanying basalt stone. The black stones were initially piled outside the Fridericianum museum, only being removed as each tree was planted. In response to the extensive urbanization of the setting the work was a long-term and large-scale artistic and ecological intervention with the goal of enduringly altering the living space of the city. West Chelsea Historic District
The West Chelsea Historic District is a portion of the neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan, New York City. It was designated as the city's 92nd historic district in July 2008 by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. It encompasses a portion of the streets between 25th and 28th Streets between Tenth Avenue and the West Side Highway and was designated as such for its architectural and manufacturing heritage.
