Cheik Ledy
Cheik Ndoluvualu, called Cheik Ledy (1962–1997), was a Congolese artist. He was born in Kinto M’Vuila, Democratic Republic of Congo. Life and career Cheik Ledy was apprenticed to his elder brother, sign painter Chéri Samba, after leaving school in 1977, and worked as Samba's assistant for 10 years in his Kinshasa studio. Like Samba, Ledy’s paintings comment on social and political issues of his day. His more controversial work included sign paintings on condom use and labour. He died of AIDS-related complications in 1997 in Kinshasa. Style and themes Ledy's paintings often depict caricatures using bright colors. He worked in the style of sign painting and used French and Lingala texts. Chéri Samba
Chéri Samba or Samba wa Mbimba N’zingo Nuni Masi Ndo Mbasi (born 30 December 1956) is a Congolese painter from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is one of the best known contemporary African artists, with his works being included in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A large number of his paintings are also found in The Contemporary African Art Collection (CAAC) of Jean Pigozzi. He has been invited to participate in the 2007 Venice Biennale. His paintings almost always include text in French and Lingala, commenting on life in Africa and the modern world. Samba lives in Kinshasa and Paris. Lingala
Lingala (or Ngala, Lingala: ) is a Bantu languages, Bantu language spoken in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the northern half of the Republic of the Congo, in their capitals, Kinshasa and Brazzaville, and to a lesser degree as a trade language or because of emigration in neighbouring Angola or Central African Republic. Contemporary African Art Collection
The Contemporary African Art Collection (CAAC) is a private collection created in 1989 by Jean Pigozzi, an Italian businessman, after his encounter with French independent curator, André Magnin. Magnin specializes in art from non-Western cultures, and especially sub-Saharan art. The CAAC came into being at a time when non-Western contemporary art was largely ignored on the international scene. It was founded shortly after the seminal exhibition ''The Magicians of the Earth'' at the Pompidou Center in Paris, curated by Jean-Huber Martin. It was the first truly international exhibition where contemporary works from all over the world were shown on an equal footing. As of May 2022, the collection was based in Geneva, Switzerland, but it "does not have a permanent exhibition venue". Jean Pigozzi
Jean "Johnny" Pigozzi (born 1952), heir to the CEO of the automobile brand Simca, is an art collector, photographer and fashion designer. He lives in Geneva. Biography Pigozzi is a "French-born Italian". He was born in Paris in 1952 and is the son of Henri Pigozzi, industry captain at the head of the Simca automobile (created by Fiat Automobiles, Fiat) brand from July 1935 to May 1963. Pigozzi studied at Harvard University before working for the Gaumont Film Company and 20th Century Fox. Art collection Pigozzi started collecting contemporary African art after visiting the show "Magiciens de la Terre" at the Pompidou Center and Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris in 1989.
