Chechen American
Chechen Americans are Americans of Chechen descent. Chechen people have origins from Chechnya, a federal subject of Russia. Demographics The first Chechen settlers arrived in the US in the 1950s and 1960s. They are a small minority group with a population numbering only several hundred, as of 2013. Exact statistics are difficult to obtain because Chechens are categorized as Russians in asylee reports. The estimated 150 Chechen families live mainly in Paterson, New Jersey, and form part of the larger North Caucasian community there. Other most significant Chechen communities are in Boston, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Los Angeles areas. Khassan Baiev
Khassan Zhunidovich Baiev (; born 4 April 1963) is a Chechen-American surgeon who performed numerous operations under critical conditions during the Second Chechen War. He is mostly known as author of two memoirs, ''The Oath: A Surgeon Under Fire'' and ''Grief of My Heart: Memoirs of a Chechen Surgeon''. Early life and education Khassan Baiev was born as a fraternal twin in Alkhan-Kala, a suburb of Grozny, in April 1963. His father, a herbalist by profession, served in the Soviet Red Army and was wounded during World War II, but was deported to Kazakhstan as a result of the forced deportations of most Chechens to Central Asia in February 1944. Baiev's parents would return in 1959 after Nikita Khrushchev allowed for the Chechens to return home during the de-Stalinization campaign. Salavadi Gugaev
Salavdi Gugaev (Салавди Гугаев; 1917–2010) was a Chechen-American who worked for the rehabilitation of Chechens and Ingush who were exiled to Central Asia in an act of ethnic cleansing. Salavadi was initially a Soviet soldier who was captured by the Wehrmacht during the Continuation War, he had to spend a prolonged period of time in a POW camp. Life as an activist After being released from the POW camp, Salavdi moved to the United States, where he began to periodically publish and appear on the air of the Voice of America and Radio Liberty stations, trying to draw the attention of the free world and heads of democratic states to the persecution for Stalin regime.
