Chaudes-Aigues
Chaudes-Aigues (; , ) is a commune in the Cantal department in south-central France. It is a spa town, famous for its hot spring waters. Geography The commune is situated in the Massif Central in Aubrac. Its inhabitants are called the ''Caldaguès'', from the Latin meaning 'hot waters', or in French, ''eaux chaudes''; hence the name of the commune, Chaudes-Aigues As its name suggests, there are thirty natural hot water sources with temperatures ranging from 45°C to more than 80°C. The most famous is the source of the Par river with a water temperature of 82°C - the hottest in Europe - with a flow in the region of 450,000 litres a day. One local story suggests that the source is so-named because a pig was dressed (''paré'') or jointed thanks to the hot water. The waters were known to the Romans, and are used all year round. Château De Couffour
The Château de Couffour or Tour du Couffour is a ruined castle situated in the French '' commune'' of Chaudes-Aigues in the Cantal ''département''. The original 15th-century castle, with seven towers with conical roof, was witness to the importance of this place during the Hundred Years War. The present remains consist of a tower and neighbouring buildings. The circular tower has attached to it, on the west, a smaller tower containing the spiral staircase that gives access to the upper floors. The ground floor, noticeably square, is vaulted. The rooms on the three upper floors display a more or less similar layout. Small circular rooms communicate with each of these rooms. On the first floor, one room still has 17th-century paintings where, on a background of bouquets of leaves and flowers, are inset portraits of women and landscapes in rectangular frames. Aubrac
Aubrac () is a volcanic and granitic plateau located in the south-central Massif Central of France. This region has been a member of the Natura 2000 network since August 2006. It straddles three ''départements'' (Cantal, Aveyron and Lozère) and three '' régions'' (Auvergne, Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon). The village of the same name is located in this region. Geography, geology Aubrac is a volcanic and granitic plateau that extends over an area of 1,500 km2. The volcanic eruptions occurred between 6 and 9 million year ago and were of Hawaiian type with fluid lavas. There are therefore no individual volcanic cones. The volcanic zone occupies the west side while the other part of the plateau is formed of granite.
