Chaucer College
Chaucer College Canterbury is an independent college for Japanese university and high school students. It was founded in 1992 by Hiroshi Kawashima, the Head of the Shumei Foundation, and opened on 13 October 1992, and is located in a prize-winning building featuring a combination of western and oriental architectural styles on the campus of the University of Kent at Canterbury. All students are recruited by the Shumei Foundation, and many are drawn from its educational establishments in Japan, consisting of a small private university and three very successful independent high schools (Shumei Kawagoe, Shumei Eiko, Shumei Yachiyo). The College now also offers English language courses for European and international students. This is in keeping with the founding principles that 'World peace in both political and economic spheres depends upon international exchange and understanding'. Shumei University
is a private university in Japan. The main campus is located in Yachiyo, Chiba, and the headquarters is located in Nakano, Tokyo. The university was founded as the Yachiyo International University in 1988. Overview Founded as the Yachiyo International University, Shumei University was established in 1998. Prior to the establishment, the Chaucer College Canterbury, also called as the Shumei Canterbury College, was established by Hiroshi Kawashima in 1992 in the area of the University of Kent in Kent, England. Almost all the freshman students in Shumei University are supposed to go and study at the Chaucer College Canterbury for a year, and come back to Japan and study at the campus in Yachiyo when they turn to Sophomore. Geoffrey Chaucer
Geoffrey Chaucer (; – 25 October 1400) was an English poet, author, and civil servant best known for ''The Canterbury Tales''. He has been called the "father of English literature", or, alternatively, the "father of English poetry". He was the first writer to be buried in what has since come to be called Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey. Chaucer also gained fame as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific '' A Treatise on the Astrolabe'' for his 10-year-old son Lewis. He maintained a career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier, diplomat, and member of parliament.
