Chaturanga
Chaturanga (, , ) is an Traditional games of India, ancient Indian Strategy game, strategy board game. It is first known from India around the seventh century AD. While there is some uncertainty, the prevailing view among chess historians is that chaturanga is the common ancestor of the board games chess, xiangqi (Chinese), janggi (Korean), shogi (Japanese), sittuyin (Burmese), makruk (Thai), makruk, ouk chatrang (Cambodian) and modern Indian chess. It was adopted as ''chatrang'' (''shatranj'') in Sassanid Persia, which in turn was the form of chess brought to Late Middle Ages, late-medieval Europe. Not all the rules of chaturanga are known with certainty. Chess historians suppose that the game had similar rules to those of its successor, shatranj. In particular, there is uncertainty as to the moves of the gaja (elephant). Shatranj Ke Khilari () is a 1924 Hindi short-story written by Munshi Premchand. Premchand also made the Urdu version titled "Shatranj ki bazi". Synopsis The story depicts decadent royalty of Central North India. It is set around the life of the last independently ruling Nawab (noble) Wajid Ali Shah and concludes with the British annexation of the Nawab's kingdom of Awadh in 1856. The two main characters are the aristocrats Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mir Raushan Ali who are deeply immersed into playing chess. Their desire for the game destroys the competency of the characters, and makes them irresponsible in their duties towards their families and society. ''Shatranj'' () is a 1993 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Aziz Sejawal, starring Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Juhi Chawla and Divya Bharti. ''Shatranj'' () is a 1969 Indian Hindi-language spy thriller film co-produced and directed by S. S. Vasan. Chadarangam
Chadarangam () is a Telugu version of Indian chess, Chaturanga. It became very famous among kings and courtesans. Previously chariots (''Ratha'') were used in warfare, but in medieval times chariots were replaced by camels (''Oṣṭra''). So, the bishop in olden days was called ''Ratha'' / ''Śakaṭa'' and in medieval ages was called ''Oṣṭra''. Etymology This name may be derived from the Sanskrit word ''Chaturanga'' or Persian word '' Chatrang''. The Sanskrit word Chaturanga has a direct meaning "having four limbs". But in a military context it has meaning "an entire army (comprising elephants, chariots, cavalry, and infantry)".
