Charmpit
Charmpit was a British punk band formed in London in 2016. Its members were Anne Marie Sanguigni (bass and vocals), Rhianydd York Williams (guitar and vocals), Alex Iossifidis (drums), and Estella Adeyeri (guitar). They released one album on Specialist Subject Records. History The band was formed initially as a trio of just Sanguigni, York Williams, and Iossifidis, to play the 2016 First Timers held at DIY Space for London. Members of the band also helped to run later editions of the festival. Sanguigni and York Williams are both originally from Southern California, meeting at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and separately moved to London shortly before forming the band. In 2017, they released an EP titled ''Jelly'' on Keroleen Records. Estella Adeyeri, also of Big Joanie, joined the band on guitar in 2018. Big Joanie
Big Joanie is a British punk band formed in London in 2013. Its members are Stephanie Phillips (guitar and vocals) and Estella Adeyeri (bass guitar and vocals). Founding drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone left the band in 2023. After a few singles and EPs they released their first album in 2018 with Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's Daydream Library Series, and have since signed to Kill Rock Stars in the U.S. History Formation and early releases Big Joanie was formed by Stephanie Phillips in 2013, who posted online asking for bandmates with whom to start a black feminist punk band after becoming frustrated with the lack of intersectionality in the scene. Chardine Taylor-Stone, who Phillips had met through a Black Feminist meet-up group, and the band's original bassist Kiera Coward-Deyell both responded to the social media post. Specialist Subject Records
Specialist Subject Records is an English independent record label initially founded in Leeds in 2007, but based largely in Exeter then Bristol since being revived in 2009. They have been described as a "powerhouse" of DIY Indie Rock. History Specialist Subject started in 2007 to release one 7" by the band Magnus Magnusson. In 2009 the label was revived in Exeter as a method of self releasing Horne's band Bangers, as well as those by friends' bands such as Caves. For some time Specialist Subject had an office in the centre of the city. Since opening a record shop in Bristol in August 2017 the label has been run from its premises upstairs at the music venue Exchange in the Old Market area of Bristol. First Timers (festival)
First Timers is a yearly series of workshops in London, England, culminating in a two-day festival that encourages "new faces and voices in bands", in order to "do something about the lack of diversity in the music community". Background The festival was founded by Bryony Beynon of Good Throb, inspired by similar events in North America, with the first events happening in 2013. To take part, one or more band members have never been in a band before or one or more members has never performed that role in a band before, and one or more band members has to belong to a group Social exclusion, marginalised in society. This includes being disabled, transgender, queer, non-binary, LGBTQIA+, a person of color, person of colour, or a woman. Kill Rock Stars
Kill Rock Stars is an independent record label founded in February 1991 by Slim Moon and Tinuviel Sampson, and based in both Olympia, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. The label has released a variety of work in different genres, but it was originally known for its commitment to underground punk rock bands and the Olympia area music scene. History Sampson and Moon initially started the label because, in Moon's words, "I just wanted to put out my friends' records because nobody was putting out my friends' records. Cambridge Heath is an area in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, approximately north east of Charing Cross. It is named after a former heath in the East End of London. The northern boundary is formed by the Regent's Canal and the area includes Vyner Street, best known for its street art and galleries.
