Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party
The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island (PEIPC) is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. Dual-member Proportional Representation
The dual-member mixed proportional (DMP) voting method is a mixed electoral system using a localized list rule to elect two representatives in each district. It is similar to other forms of mixed-member proportional representation, but differs from the additional-member system in that all representatives are elected locally in small districts, rather than requiring separate list seats to be filled in large regional or nationwide districts. In the first step, one seat in each district is awarded to the candidate or party with the most votes, as with first-past-the-post voting rules. In the second step, underrepresented parties are assigned secondary seats in the districts in which they won the most votes, which creates an overall proportional result. 2016 Prince Edward Island Electoral Reform Referendum
A non-binding referendum on electoral reform was held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island between 27 October – 7 November 2016. This was the second electoral reform referendum to be held in Prince Edward Island, following a vote to maintain the status quo in 2005. The referendum asked which of five voting systems residents would prefer to use in electing members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The referendum used Instant-runoff voting. Four rounds were held. This brought the options down to just two, where mixed member proportional representation was the majority choice with 55.03% support of the total 35,287 active votes, while first past the post had 45 percent of those votes. Dean Constable (born January 11, 1980, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada) was the leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island (NDP) from 2006 to 2007. He replaced Gary Robichaud as leader. Constable used to be the theatre stage manager for the Charlottetown Festival. Constable was elected the leader of the Island New Democrats on April 23, 2006, by a narrow margin over labour leader Mike DesRoches. He announced he would be running on an anti-privatisation and pro-universal health care and child care platform. Sharon Labchuk
Sharon Labchuk (born November 25, 1952 in Trenton, Ontario) is an environmental activist and political organizer for the Green Party of Canada (GPC). She was also the first leader of the Green Party of Prince Edward Island. Career Labchuk founded the Green Party of Prince Edward Island in 2004. Labchuk is national director of organizing for the GPC. She resigned the leadership of the Green Party of PEI on July 12, 2012. Joey Kitson
Joey Kitson (born ) is a Canadian musician, best known as the lead singer of the Celtic rock band Rawlins Cross. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Kitson is also a stage performer, with notable performances in the Charlottetown Festival productions of '' Anne of Green Gables: The Musical'' and '' Canada Rocks!'' Kitson first performed in a high school production of ''Bye Bye Birdie'' on the Charlottetown Festival stage. Soon after, he and friends formed the Rock Island Blues Band, a popular band touring Prince Edward Island in the 1980s. Through touring and a stint with a regional tourism promotion, he met other members of Rawlins Cross and officially joined the band as their new lead singer in 1993. The Green Party of Prince Edward Island, or Green Party of PEI, is a registered provincial political party and one of the three major parties in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The party was founded by Sharon Labchuk, a political organizer for the federal Green Party of Canada. 2019 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2019 Prince Edward Island general election was held to elect the members of the 66th General Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The vote in 26 of the 27 districts was held on 23 April 2019, while the vote for the member from Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park was deferred to 15 July due to the death of the Green Party's candidate. However, Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park still voted in a referendum on electoral reform. Natalie Jameson won the deferred election in the district.
