Charlie Glass
Charles Edward Glass (24 May 1934 – 23 February 1998) was an American horticulturalist and plant collector. Together with his best friend, Bob Foster, Glass collected and scientifically described dozens of cacti species, edited the '' Cactus and Succulent Journal'', led the Lotusland botanical garden, and ran a garden and shell business. He also wrote books and curated a botanical reserve in Mexico, helping discover more plant species. Early life Glass was born in New York City and his family enjoyed the arts. His childhood home was in Spring Lake, New Jersey. His mother, Lillian, sang opera, and his father, Beaumont, played the violin for the Philadelphia Orchestra and he was the "founding conductor" of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra. Ganna Walska
Ganna Walska (born Hanna Puacz on June 26, 1887 – March 2, 1984) was a Polish opera singer and garden enthusiast who created the Lotusland botanical gardens at her mansion in Montecito, California. She was married six times, four times to wealthy husbands. The lavish promotion of her lackluster opera career by her fourth husband, Harold Fowler McCormick, inspired aspects of the screenplay for ''Citizen Kane''. Biography Ganna Walska was born Hanna Puacz on 26 June 1887 in Brest, Russian Empire, to Polish parents Napoleon Puacz and Karolina Massalska. Ganna is a Ukrainian form of Hannah, and Walska "reminiscent of her favorite music, the waltz". In 1922, after her marriage to Harold F. International Organization For Succulent Plant Study
The International Organization for Succulent Plant Study (IOS) describes itself as a "non-governmental organization promoting the study and conservation of succulent and allied plants and encouraging collaboration among scientists and curators of significant living collections of such plants, professional or amateur." In 1984, it was decided that the Cactaceae Section of the IOS should set up a working party, now called the International Cactaceae Systematics Group (ICSG), to produce consensus classifications of cacti down to the level of genera.
