Charles William Maynes
Charles William Maynes (December 9, 1938 – June 2, 2007) was a United States diplomat and long-time editor of ''Foreign Policy'' magazine. Biography Charles W. Maynes was born in Huron, South Dakota, on December 9, 1938. He was educated at Harvard College, receiving a bachelor's degree in history in 1960. He was then awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and studied at Merton College, Oxford, receiving a master's degree in politics, philosophy, and economics in 1962. Maynes was fluent in French and Russian. Maynes joined the United States Foreign Service in 1962 after graduating from Oxford. Over the next nine years, he served as a Foreign Service Officer in Laos and the Soviet Union. In 1972, he left the foreign service to join the staff of Sargent Shriver, the running mate of Democratic candidate George McGovern in the 1972 presidential election. Presidential elections were held in the United States on November 7, 1972. Incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew defeated Democratic Senator George McGovern and former Ambassador Sargent Shriver in a landslide victory. With 60.7% of the popular vote, Richard Nixon won the largest share of the popular vote for the Republican Party in any presidential election. George McGovern
George Stanley McGovern (July 19, 1922 – October 21, 2012) was an American politician, diplomat, and historian who was a U.S. representative and three-term U.S. senator from South Dakota, and the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 U.S. presidential election. McGovern grew up in Mitchell, South Dakota, where he became a renowned debater. He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Forces, U.S. Army Air Forces upon the country's American entry into World War II, entry into World War II. As a B-24 Liberator pilot, he flew 35 missions over German-occupied Europe from a base in Italy. Robert Sargent Shriver Jr. (November 9, 1915 – January 18, 2011) was an American diplomat, politician, and activist. He was a member of the Shriver family by birth, and a member of the Kennedy family through his marriage to Eunice Kennedy. Shriver was the driving force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, and founded the Job Corps, Head Start, VISTA, Upward Bound, and other programs as the architect of the 1960s War on Poverty. A Foreign Service officer (FSO) is a commissioned member of the United States Foreign Service. FSOs formulate and implement the foreign policy of the United States.
