Charles W. Eldridge
Charles Wadleigh Eldridge (October 16, 1877 – May 15, 1965) was a Massachusetts businessman and politician who served as a member in both the House and Senate of the Massachusetts legislature, as a member of the Board of Aldermen, and as the seventeenth List of mayors of Somerville, Massachusetts, Mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts. Eldridge was a delegate to the 1920 Republican National Convention. In addition to his duties as an officeholder, Eldridge also started working as a salesman for Chase & Sanborn Coffee Company, Chase & Sanborn in 1893. Eldridge had married Edith, the daughter of Harriett J. Brown. Eldridge had five children: Raymon W. Eldridge, Arthur F. Eldridge, Warren P. Eldridge, Louise Eldridge, and Charlotte Eldridge. 1920 Republican National Convention
The 1920 Republican National Convention nominated Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding for president and Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge for vice president. The convention was held in Chicago, Illinois, at the Chicago Coliseum from June 8 to June 12, 1920, with 940 delegates. Under convention rules, a majority plus one, or at least 471 of the 940 delegates, was necessary for a nomination. Many Republicans sought the presidential nomination, including General Leonard Wood, Illinois Governor Frank Lowden and California Senator Hiram Johnson. Dark horse Harding, however, was nominated. Many wanted to nominate Wisconsin Senator Irvine L. Lenroot for vice president, but Coolidge was nominated instead, because he was known for his response to the Boston Police Strike in 1919. Chase & Sanborn Coffee Company
Chase & Sanborn Coffee is an American brand of coffee created by the coffee roasting and tea and coffee importing company of the same name, established in 1864 in Boston, Massachusetts by Caleb Chase (1831-1908) and James Solomon Sanborn (1835-1903). It says that it is the first coffee company to pack and ship roasted coffee in sealed tins. History When Standard Brands was formed in 1929, it acquired Chase & Sanborn, where it remained until 1981 when the company merged into Nabisco. Nabisco sold Chase & Sanborn to Florida importer General Coffee Co. owned by Colombian Alberto Duque in 1982. Duque's creditors sold the business to Hills Bros. which bought the company in 1984; Nestle became the new parent in 1985.
