Charles "King" Solomon (1884 – January 24, 1933) was a Russian-born mob boss who controlled Boston's bootlegging, narcotics, and illegal gambling during the Prohibition era. Biography One of the earliest organized crime figures in New England's history, Solomon immigrated from the Russian Empire as a boy settling with his family in Boston's West End. The son of a local theater owner, Solomon and his three brothers came from a middle-class Jewish background and, during his teenage years, he worked as a counterman in his uncle's restaurant. However, by his early 20s, he had become involved in prostitution, fencing and bail bonding prior to Prohibition. By the early 1920s, he controlled the majority of illegal gambling and narcotics, such as cocaine and morphine, before expanding into bootlegging during Prohibition, owning many of the cities' most prominent speakeasies, including the Cocoanut Grove nightclub. Charles Solomon (October 9, 1889 – December 8, 1963) was an American socialist lawyer, politician and judge from New York City, elected to the New York State Assembly in 1919 and expelled with four of his fellows on the first day of the legislative session, one week after the sensational Palmer Raids. The case of the "Five Socialist Assemblymen" became a cause célèbre of the First Red Scare, Red Scare of 1919-20 and its resolution started the process of curbing war hysteria in the United States. Charles Solomon is an American animation historian, author, and film critic who wrote multiple books about Disney animation and other animated works. Education Solomon attended University of California Los Angeles for his bachelor's and master's degrees in European cultural history. Accolades ''Enchanted Drawings'', Solomon's 1989 book on the history of American animation, was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and was also nominated for a National Book Critics’ Circle Award (a first for a film book). Charles Solomon Huffman
Charles Solomon Huffman (8 October 1865 – 6 May 1960) was an American politician. Between 1919 and 1923 he served as Lieutenant Governor of Kansas. Life Charles Huffman was born in Vincennes, Indiana and attended local schools. In his younger years he worked on his father's farm. After his graduation from high school in 1883 he taught school for some time and he studied medicine at the University of Missouri. Starting in 1890 he practiced as a physician in Columbus, Kansas. During the Spanish–American War he served in the Philippines as a captain in the medical department of the US forces. Shortly after the turn of the century he terminated his medical career. Instead he was engaged in banking and became one of the directors of the Columbus State Bank. He became the president of this bank in 1915. He held this position until 1960, just before his death.
