Charles Cameron Donald Shute (1917–1999) was an English physician and academic, known for his research on neurotransmitters and the McCollough effect. Early life He was the son of Amy Bertha Ernestine Pepper-Staveley (1878–1958), known as Mrs. Cameron Shute as a writer, and her second husband Cameron Dinsdale Deane Shute, for a short period an army officer; the writer Nerina Shute was his elder sister. His parents separated when he was two years old. His mother left the country, and Charles Shute was fostered by his godmother Kathleen Cross. Shute attended Stoke House prep school in Seaford, Sussex, and in 1930 won a scholarship to Eton College. Nerina commented "My brother had little love as a child, but a good education, I had plenty of love but little education." Ultimately he was adopted by his godmother. Neurotransmitter
A neurotransmitter is a signaling molecule secreted by a neuron to affect another cell across a Chemical synapse, synapse. The cell receiving the signal, or target cell, may be another neuron, but could also be a gland or muscle cell. Neurotransmitters are released from synaptic vesicles into the synaptic cleft where they are able to interact with neurotransmitter receptors on the target cell. Some neurotransmitters are also stored in large dense core vesicles. The neurotransmitter's effect on the target cell is determined by the receptor it binds to. Many neurotransmitters are synthesized from simple and plentiful precursors such as amino acids, which are readily available and often require a small number of biosynthetic steps for conversion. Wilhelm Siegmund Feldberg (19 November 1900 – 23 October 1993) was a German-British physiologist and biologist. Biography Feldberg was born in Hamburg to a wealthy middle class Jewish family. He studied medicine at Heidelberg, Munich and Berlin, graduating in 1925. He was the brother of the painter Lore Feldberg-Eber de">:de:Lore_Feldberg-Eber">de In the same year he moved with his new wife to England and studied first under John Newport Langley at Cambridge and then Henry Dale at Hampstead. In 1927 he returned to the Physiological Institute in Berlin but he was dismissed in 1933 during the Nazi purge of Jewish scientists. Acetylcholine (ACh) is an organic compound that functions in the brain and body of many types of animals (including humans) as a neurotransmitter. The reticular formation is a set of interconnected nuclei in the brainstem that spans from the lower end of the medulla oblongata to the upper end of the midbrain. The neurons of the reticular formation make up a complex set of neural networks in the core of the brainstem. The reticular formation is made up of a diffuse net-like formation of reticular nuclei which is not well-defined.
