Charles Ashmead Schaeffer
Charles Ashmead Schaeffer (August 14, 1843 – September 23, 1898) was a chemist who served as the seventh President of the University of Iowa, serving from 1887 to 1898. Early life Schaeffer was born on August 14, 1843, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Rev. Charles William Schaeffer, the prominent Lutheran clergyman, and Elizabeth Fry Ashmead Schaeffer. Schaeffer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1861. From 1863 to 1865, he studied at Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard University. He received his PhD from the University of Göttingen in 1868. Career From 1887 to 1898, Schaeffer served as the seventh President of the University of Iowa. Personal life Schaeffer was married to Evelyn Schuyler (1846–1942), the daughter of George W. Schuyler, who served as New York State Treasurer, and sister of Eugene Schuyler, the writer and diplomat. Charles Frederic August Schaeffer
Charles Frederic August Schaeffer (12 June 1860 – 29 August 1934) was an American entomologist who specialized in beetles, particularly chrysomelids and weevils. He described 109 species in 91 genera and some species like ''Taphrocerus schaefferi'' Nicolay & Weiss were described from his collections and named after him. Schaeffer was born in London to German parents. When the family returned to Germany, he was educated there and became interested in insects at a very young age. It is not known when he moved to the United States but he was one of the founding members of the Brooklyn Entomological Society in 1892. Charles William Schaeffer (born in Hagerstown, Maryland, 5 May 1813; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 15 March 1896) was a Lutheran clergyman and theologian of the United States. Biography His parents were Frederick Solomon Schaeffer (1790-1815) and Catherine Elizabeth Schaeffer. His father was a Lutheran clergyman, as were his uncles David Frederick Schaeffer, Frederick Christian Schaeffer and Charles Frederick Schaeffer, and his grandfather Frederick David Schaeffer. He grew up in the home of his grandfather and that of stepfather Benjamin Keller. He attended Germantown Academy, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1832, and at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1835, licensed to preach in 1835, and ordained in 1836. Charles Frederick Schaeffer
Charles Frederick Schaeffer (3 September 1807 in Germantown, Pennsylvania – 23 November 1879 in Philadelphia) was a Lutheran clergyman of the United States. Biography His parents were Frederick David Schaeffer and Rosina Rosenmiller. His father was a Lutheran clergyman, as were his brothers David Frederick, Frederick Christian, and Frederick Solomon, and his nephew Charles William. He was educated in the University of Pennsylvania, and studied theology under the direction of his father and Charles Rudolph Demme. He was ordained in 1829, and became pastor at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1834. In the latter year he moved to Hagerstown, Maryland, where he had charge of several Lutheran congregations until 1839. He was professor of theology in Capitol University, Columbus, Ohio 1840-43.
