Charles S. Roberts Award
The Charles S. Roberts Awards (or CSR Awards) is an annual award for excellence in manual, tabletop games, with a focus on "conflict simulations", which includes simulations of non-military as well as military conflicts. From its founding in 1975 through 2021, the award was almost exclusively focused on historical wargaming, changing to a broader "conflict simulations" in award year 2022 (calendar year 2023). It is named in honor of Charles S. Roberts the "Father of Wargaming" who founded Avalon Hill. The award is informally called a "Charlie" and officially called a "Charles S. Roberts Award". Multi-Man Publishing, LLC ("MMP"), founded in 1994, is a Maryland based game company that publishes many wargame titles, including '' Advanced Squad Leader'' and Operational Combat Series. History Multi-Man Publishing (MMP) was founded in 1994 by four Avalon Hill playtesters and a graphics art designer. Their first publication was ''Backblast'', a fanzine for Avalon Hill's wargame '' Advanced Squad Leader'' (ASL). Around the same time, Avalon Hill had made the decision that ASL did not have a future, and so MMP sought to keep it alive among fans by publishing occasional scenarios and a fanzine. Space Empires 4X is a 4X science fiction board wargame developed by Jim Krohn and published by GMT Games in 2011. It has received two expansions: Close Encounters (2012) and Replicators (2018), with a third one, All Good Things, in development. Gameplay In Space Empires 4X, up to 4 players engage in space exploration, colonization and combat, while developing technologies to design new ships or improve their existing ones. The game is played on a hexagonal map of space, and ships are represented by cardboard chits. Matt Calkins is the co-founder, CEO, chairman, and president of Appian Corporation, and a world champion board gamer. Early life and career Calkins grew up in Mill Valley, California. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1994 with a degree in economics. He then joined MicroStrategy, a business software vendor where he was the director of the Enterprise Product Group. When he was 26, he left MicroStrategy and co-founded Appian. In 1999, Calkins co-founded Appian and began building software tools such as an intranet portal for the U.S. Army. In 2008, the company raised $8 million, and in 2014, raised $36 million in a secondary offering led by venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates. Appian later went public in May 2017. Mark Simonitch (born December 30, 1957) is an American wargame designer and graphic artist. His game designs include ''Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage'' and ''Ardennes '44'', and he has made maps for ''Wilderness War'' and ''Empire of the Sun'' among others. He has worked at Avalon Hill and GMT Games. He was inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame in 2002. Biography Simonitch was raised in Ross, California. With a career spanning more than five decades, Herman is regarded as a pioneer in the genre, particularly for his innovations in card-driven games (CDGs), which blend narrative and strategy through card-based mechanics.
