Charles Rutherford (bushranger)
Charles Rutherford (6 September 1869) was an Australian bushranger who, in the late 1860s, went on a crime spree with Frank Pearson, alias Captain Starlight, in the north-west of New South Wales. Rutherford and Pearson raided stations and isolated settlements. During one shootout with the police, Rutherford killed a constable. After Pearson's capture in December 1868, Rutherford remained at large for nine months, eluding the police until he was shot dead while holding up a hotel. Life Rutherford's early life is largely unknown, though he is believed to have been Australian-born. He worked as a stockman and horsebreaker at Gunningbar Creek, in the Central West of New South Wales. It was here, in September 1868, that he met Frank Pearson, who lured him into bushranging. Bushranger
Bushrangers were armed robbers and outlaws who resided in The bush#Australia, the Australian bush between the 1780s and the early 20th century. The original use of the term dates back to the early years of the British colonisation of Australia, and applied to convicts in Australia, transported convicts who had escaped into the bush to hide from the authorities. By the 1820s, the term had evolved to refer to those who took up "armed robbery, robbery under arms" as a way of life, using the bush as their base. Bushranging thrived during the mid-19th century Australian gold rushes, gold rushes, with many bushrangers roaming the goldfields and country districts of New South Wales and Victoria (state), Victoria, and to a lesser extent Queensland. Warren, New South Wales
Warren is a town in the Orana Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located off the Mitchell Highway, 120 kilometres north west of Dubbo, and is the seat of the Warren Shire local government area. At the , Warren had a population of 1,365. Warren is included in the Central West Slopes and Plains division of the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts. History Before European settlement the area is said to have been occupied by the Ngiyambaa Aborigines. Explorer John Oxley camped on the present town site during his investigation of the Macquarie River in 1818. He noted an abundance of kangaroos and emus. Canonba
Canonba is a locality in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. There was also a village of the same name (sometimes spelt Canonbar or Cannonbar), which is now a ghost town. It lay on Duck Creek, a tributary of the Bogan River, approximately 30 km north-east of Nyngan. Since 1983, the old village site has been known officially as Old Canonba. History Aboriginal history The area upon which Canonba lay is on the traditional lands of Wangaaypuwan dialect speakers (also known as Wangaibon) of Ngiyampaa people. After colonisation, although dispossessed, the local people remained on their lands; as late as 1889, a corroboree took place near Canonba. In the year 1907, there were 35 Aborigines recorded as living at 'Canonbar'. The name Canonba may be derived from a local language word for the shingle-back lizard (''Tiliqua rugosa''). Nandewar Range
The Nandewar Range, a mountain range that is part of the Great Dividing Range, is located in the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia. The range is situated approximately east of the township of Narrabri. John Oxley was the first European to see the range in 1818 as he explored the New South Wales. Location and features The range is located on the western, inland, side of the New England region, and generally forms the watershed divide between the Namoi River and Gwydir River catchment basins to the south and north respectively. The Macdonald River starting south of Walcha drains west to Warrabah National Park where it changes its name to the Namoi then is added to by the Manilla River, Peel River and Mooki River. Booligal
Booligal is a village in the Riverina area of western New South Wales (NSW), Australia. It is located on the Cobb Highway, on the Lachlan River north of Hay. Booligal is a part of Hay Shire local government area. The name of the village is an anglicisation of an Aboriginal word meaning either (1) 'windy place', or (2) 'large swamp', 'place of flooded box trees'. History Booligal is situated on the traditional boundary of the Mathi Mathi people, Muthi Muthi and Nari Nari Aboriginal tribes. Enngonia, New South Wales
Enngonia, formerly known as Eringonia, is a small town in the north-west of New South Wales, Australia, in Bourke Shire, approximately north of the regional centre of Bourke, New South Wales, Bourke. Frank Pearson
Frank Pearson (c. 1837–22 December 1899) was an Australian bushranger, operating under the pseudonym ''Captain Starlight.'' Pearson claimed he was the inspiration for a fictional figure of the same pseudonym: the character Captain Starlight in Rolf Boldrewood's novel, of 1882–1883, ''Robbery Under Arms''. Boldrewood, who presumably had some insight into the matter, denied the claim and stated that the character was a composite of several bushrangers of the era, including Henry Readford, and primarily Thomas Smith, alias ''Captain Midnight''. The cattle thief Readford did not use a pseudonym himself and had no connection with Captain Starlight until the author indicated a possible influence. Warrego River
The Warrego River is an intermittent river that is part of the Darling catchment within the Murray–Darling basin, which is located in South West Queensland and in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. The Warrego River is the northernmost tributary of the Darling River. Course and features The river rises from below Mount Ka Ka Mundi in the Carnarvon Range, near Tambo in Queensland, and flows generally south, reaching its confluence with the Darling River, downstream from Bourke. The river is joined by thirty-seven tributaries, including the Nive and Langlo rivers; descending over its course.
