Charles Melbourne Ward
Charles Melbourne Ward (6 October 1903 – 6 October 1966) was an stage performer, naturalist, historian and marine collector. Although he began as an acrobat and comedian he is best known for his work as a naturalist which included him catching 25,000 crabs from locations all around the world. He didn't use his first name and was generally know as Mel Ward and published under the name Melbourne Ward. Early life Ward was born 6 October 1903 in Melbourne to stage actor Hugh J. Ward and concert singer Grace Ward. Due to travelling with his parents his education was in various locations including New York and Darlinghurst, Sydney. He left school in 1919 to start working on the stage as an acrobat, comedian, dancer and actor starting with ''The Bing Boys on Broadway'', part of the The Bing Boys Are Here series of revues. ''Lovers and Luggers'' is a 1937 Australian film directed by Ken G. Hall. It is an adventure melodrama about a pianist ( Lloyd Hughes) who goes to Thursday Island to retrieve a valuable pearl. It was retitled ''Vengeance of the Deep'' in the US and United Kingdom. Synopsis In London, concert pianist Daubenny Carshott is feeling dissatisfied with his life and wanting a masculine adventure; he also desires the beautiful Stella Raff. Stella agrees to marry him if he brings back a large pearl with his own hands from Thursday Island. Daubenny notes a painting in Stella's apartment from "Craig Henderson" but when asked Stella is evasive about the artist. The Hydro Majestic Hotel is located in Medlow Bath, New South Wales, Australia. The hotel is located on a clifftop overlooking the Megalong Valley on the western side of the Great Western Highway. The hotel is heritage listed and is notable for its unusual mix of architectural styles, including Art Deco and Edwardian. One key feature is the Casino dome (pictured). The dome was bought in Chicago and shipped to Australia, before being shipped to the Blue Mountains by bullock train and reassembled at the site.
